Norwalk Meat Dealer Victim of Forged Check Scheme
Fred Hoyt, a Norwalk meat dealer, was swindled out of 1140 by a forged 14 dollar check payable to William Miller. The check purportedly came from Joseph Smith of Smith and Himberger. The culprit registered at Maple City House as J C Richie of Dayton 10. Richie is wanted for a 13 dollar unpaid board bill and was seen in Toledo after soliciting orders for rubber tires on rocking chairs. He is about 35, short, wearing light clothes, with Mack felt hat and a partially blind right eye.

Samuel Potts21 24 a Osceola Missouri man formerly in the Thirty ninth Illinois Infantry was captured by Marton police after attacking Henry Hall on a farm with stones Potts who had subsisted on grass and vegetables claimed officers would arrest him and that he deserted to avoid arrest in September 1899 after enlisting for service in the Philippines He was taken to jail where he became ill from exertion and stated his home was Osceola Missouri He said officers did not feed soldiers adequately prompting his desertion
