Reports from Havana and Washington describe President Gomez signaling General Monteagudo that American marines may land on Cuban soil to guard foreign property. The 100 Marines aboard the gunboat Paducah are in Daiquiri, awaiting orders to land if needed to protect American interests amid Cuban revolt led by Estenoz and Ivonnet.
Colonel Marti and Lieutenant Colonel Consuegra left Havana aboard the gun boat Hatuey to meet Commander George G. Mitchell of the Paducah at Daiquiri. They report Cuban forces can handle Daiquiri without American marines and note troop detachments were sent to Cuero after Ponfu manganese mine protection demands. Extra editions claim fighting in Oriente with heavy rebel deaths, but government sources give no confirmation. Some extras say the Prairie has landed marines, yet this is deemed unlikely.

Mrs Mary Dubalois of Binghamton became possibly the first woman in the United States jailed for husband beating. A warrant by her husband Dubai led to her conviction. The magistrate said women seeking male prerogatives should face male punishment and sentenced her to three months in a penitentiary.
Testimony before the house judiciary committee tied Judge Archbald to railroad business deals. Washington report says Archbald sought coal pile leases near Shenandoah Pa with Lehigh Valley interests and attempted to reconcile Marion Coal and Lackawanna disputes. The Bolands claimed $60,000 in reparations. messenger George M. Watson sought $160,000.
Washington May 31 Under an ideal day the president and Mrs Taft hosted the final spring lawn party on the White House grounds. Military and naval aides wore white while the Marine band clad in scarlet and blue and diplomats flashed with gold lace. Hundreds of officials and their wives attended.
At the Astor mansion on Fifth Avenue two Titanic widows Mrs Madeline Astor and Mrs John B Thayer honored Captain Rostron and Dr Frank McGee with a luncheon. Also present were Mrs Thayer and Mrs Force with plans for Rostron to visit Philadelphia and a memorial concert for Titanic musicians.

New York May 3 Lillian Graham the show girl who with Ethel Conrad was acquitted of attempting the life of W E D Stokes filed suit today asking 100000 damages for false and malicious prosecution.
Carl Smith, 58, an inmate at the Dayton State hospital, died from severe burns after an attendant failed to turn off hot water during a bath. The incident began when Smith complained the water was cold and the faucet wrench caused scalding. Attendant Joe Novotney was discharged and faces possible criminal charges. Smith had come from Marathon, Clermont County, where his mother and son live.
Profs Shepard and Day of the Carnegie foundation were lowered by ropes into Kilauea crater in Hawaii and remained over the lava bed for several hours. They collected gas samples and molten stone for analysis, marking a historic ascent into the lake of fire.
Pluntano, last of the famed wild men of Borneo, died at Mrs. H A Warner's home in Waltham Massachusetts. Believed to be about 92, he and his brother Wano traveled the world after being brought to New York in the early 1850s. The pair, captured on Borneo, had lived under the care of Captain Hansford War ens and his descendants since 1857. He could not be taught to speak English.
Atlantic City May 31 A city councilman Harry F Dougherty was arrested on charges of accepting a 500 bribe to vote for a boardwalk ordinance costing a million dollars plus He pleaded not guilty and posted 3000 bail for the grand jury An alleged undercover probe led by detective Burns produced details of a trap involving a New York contractor and other officials in a broader bribery scheme
The appellate division of the supreme court ruled that Henry Clay Pierce may apply to the supreme court to set aside a $171,000 judgment against him. He may also open his default if he shows a good defense and inability to attend the trial in New York. The suit involves a stock account loss and an alleged promise to manage her account during a broker transfer.
Walter F. Brown states President Taft seeks no compromise in selecting Ohio delegates at large for Chicago. Roosevelt supporters claim a state convention majority and vow to stay true to their standard bearer. Roosevelt carried 69 of 88 counties. Taft 19. La Follette led in five Republican strongholds.
In Columbus on May 31 Colonel Roosevelt denounces Taft Roosevelt forces seeking one at large delegate in Ohio. He argues the state primary gave a 30,000 vote margin and warns any delegate-at-large for Taft would defraud the people. He calls for delegates to reflect the will of the voters.
Warren G. Harding met with President Taft in Washington for a lengthy conference. Harding stated that he has not been asked to nominate the president in Chicago and that no such suggestion or authorization has been given to him.
