Secretary of War Taft and party spent Sunday morning in Kyoto with some members attending church and others visiting temples. At 3 pm the group left for Kobe on a special train to a large cheering crowd at the station. The band played the national anthem and Auld Lang Syne as the train departed.
Secretary Taft and party arrived from Kyoto at 5 pm to a warm reception by Governor, Mayor, and thousands. A water front reception followed amid day fireworks. Taft and Miss Roosevelt received several presents before the Manchuria set sail at 10 pm for Nagasaki. Captain R. H. Noble met the party as military aide to the Governor of the Philippine Islands.
Rev. A. W. Gehrer and Rev. W. K. Richardson hid in a box car to observe saloon practices in Veedersburg Indiana. They were followed by two saloon men who attacked them. the ministers defended themselves and beat both assailants before the fight ended. They plan to report the incident to the grand jury.
Nearly 5 000 visitors from Cincinnati Newport Covington and nearby areas came to Ft Thomas to view the Fighting Fourth infantry new arrivals from the Philippines. Extra streetcars crowded all night as soldiers unpacked bags and displayed Manila and Japanese curios. A sergeant sold a Philippine bolo for 40 dollars to a Cincinnati doctor, while bamboo carvings ivory idols shells and woven cloth drew many purchases. The troops have not been paid for three months and the paymaster is due Wednesday.
General Booth of the Salvation Army arrived in London today after a trip to Australia and is in excellent health. He will embark on a 2000 mile motor tour starting tomorrow.
Tokyo reports detail a Japanese cavalry victory on Sakhalin Island after assaults at Rykoff and west environs. They claim to have taken the town by 8:30 am on July 28 with heavy enemy losses, while pursuing forces southward. Correspondents in the city discuss Japan’s postwar ambitions and honors for Komura and Takahira.
Baron Komura and Baron Kaneko visited Peekskill while work at the Peace Commission continued. London remains loyal to Japan, opposing armistice pressure and offering no guidance to Tokyo on peace terms with Russia.
A pitched fight broke out between members of the Madison Show Company medical concern and Elmwood Place baseball players over ball grounds on Township avenue. Three arrests followed as White, his brother, and a man named Curtis were jailed on bonds. Curtis later left after bail was posted. A mayoral hearing is set for Tuesday night.
At Basle on July 30 the Zionist Congress voted overwhelmingly against accepting Great Britain's offer of an East African land for a Zionist colony. President Nordau suspended the tumultuous session at dawn, and the assembly later affirmed that Palestine remains the goal while thanking Britain and honoring John Hay.
A violent thunderstorm struck New York causing five bathers at Parkway Baths on Coney Island to be killed and nine injured while sheltering under a bathhouse. Another man died at Gravesend Beach as storm debris caused widespread damage and fear.
Frank Johnson 27 of St Bernard was struck by an outbound B&O S W passenger train while walking the rails near Ivorydale Junction. Both legs were severed above the knees and his skull fractured. he was taken to City Hospital with patrol assistance. Johnson was single and lived with his parents.
A ten minute downtown melee on Central avenue involved about two hundred white and colored protesters. Aged youths and women fought with fists feet and a brick struck a white boy breaking a window at Ruehl's. Police detained three suspects who were later freed for lack of identification.
Floods from heavy rain burst reservoirs north of Bridgeport Connecticut causing multiple dam breaks. Homes swept away with drownings reported including Michael Moran and Kowzeski. Rescue efforts saved several people. Barnum Avenue Bridge wrecked as North Bridgeport flood raged.
At Hotel Victory in Put-In-Bay on July 30 Anna Kruzyak, a Polish worker, was beaten by fellow Polish women who believed she bewitched them. She disappeared after the assault and a search failed to locate her. Authorities consider arresting Polish leaders and subjecting them to a sweatbox examination to probe superstitions linked to the case.
Leola Morton, daughter of Melville Morton in Cleveland, awoke to a thunderstorm and the odor of chloroform used by burglars who had broken in and ransacked the house. Neighbors revived Morton after an hour of effort.
President Roosevelt and Mrs. Roosevelt with several children attended the morning service at Christ Episcopal Church in Oyster Bay New York. No official visitors were received and calls by relatives and friends remained formal.
Dell Stewart a former mayor of Osceola Iowa and former district judge in Iowa died today in Portland Oregon after an operation. He was born in Zanesville Ohio in 1849 and was a prominent attorney in Osceola.
Mrs. Mary Rumper from Log Valley Assiniboia writes Cincinnati friends detailing hardships faced by forty Cincinnati families who left eight months ago for new fortunes. Her husband William Aumper died after an epileptic fit in a haymow, draining funds. Colonists, mainly tailors and shoemakers, struggle with nonfarm work and unpaying farms under railway company terms, with many seeking return.
Thirty more people fall ill with yellow fever as health measures tighten. The report attributes twenty seven fatalities to the outbreak and notes mounting concern over public health precautions.
