A string of railroad crossing crashes leaves twenty four dead across multiple states including Illinois Indiana Missouri New York North Carolina Vermont. Train strikes vehicles as drivers attempt crossings. several more injured in distinct wrecks.
A Pittsburgh bound Pennsy passenger train struck a car attempting to cross tracks near Liggett Indiana killing nine occupants of the car and four people in Highland. The victims include Velta Bostwick and Ethel Slavens with families from Danville and Terra Haute. The driver Raymond Thomason survived briefly before dying.
A major blaze in Stockton California killed one man and overpowered eight others, destroying from 800000 to 1000000 dollars in property in the citys business district. Homer Felts 31 principal of Porterville schools died leaping from the Philson Hotel second story.
Firemen climbed the 52 floors of the Woolworth Building in New York chasing a non existent blaze. The automatic alarm rang by accident and the crew returned to their stations after a long, tiring search.

Frank Stunich 28 of Dayton detained in County Jail after abducting Xenia Chief of Police Graham. Stunich, injured by a shot to the cheek, says he intended a joy ride and harm was not planned. Chief Graham sought arrest over threats to his mother-in-law and wife. divorce filings expected.
President Harding, recovering from ptomaine poisoning, arrived in San Francisco and requires indefinite rest. Dr. Sawyer said he is much better but still weak and pale, with officials cautious about resuming the schedule until strength returns.
Mrs. Anna Marie Bedinger, missing from Chickasaw avenue since June 22, appeared in Washington Missouri on July 25, sending a telegram to Cincinnati then boarding a train to St Louis with about ten dollars. Telegraph operator L H Becker identified her from clothing, a gold upper tooth, and a Cincinnati telegram. Police seek confirmation if she reached St Louis and Washington for fuller details.
Albert Baldock a 17 year old resident of 1754 Pulte Street died when he fell from a freight train west of Clifton Avenue on the Big Four Railroad. He was dragged under the cars and died instantly. bystanders alerted police and Coroner Handley ordered the body taken to the morgue. Davis Murphy, 60, is reported killed on a separate July 29 Knoxville incident.
A pedestrian was struck at a trestle by a passenger train and hurled twenty feet to the ground, authorities report. Rescue crews responded as bystanders watched, with the victim transported to a nearby hospital for injuries.

Henry S. Fechheimer 81 a pioneer in Cincinnati wholesale clothing died at his daughter Mrs Louis Stixs Avondale home after a heart attack. He was born in Bavaria Germany 1842 came to the US at 13 and spent his life in Cincinnati in wholesale clothiers and with Earls Blain Company. He is survived by a daughter a son three grandchildren and two great grandchildren and was a Mason and G A R member. Funeral arrangements not announced.
The Anti-Saloon League of New York warns legislators that voting for a grand jury recommended investigation into the league would be an overt act of war against about 5000 Protestant churches. The group asserts its affairs are conducted honestly and legally, with politics only as a motive for the probe.
Dr. J Eads How of St Louis nicknamed Millionaire Hobo was arrested in Philadelphia while distributing cards for a hobo conference and picnic. He obeyed an officer to gather the cards but continued to advertise by word of mouth and was released after arraignment. He faces a hearing tomorrow. George S Bonner, conference chairman, praised Woodrow Wilson's call for spiritual regeneration.
New York July 29. Z. B. Curtis, vice president and cashier of Union Trust Company of Little Rock Ark, was named vice president of the Guaranty Company today. He will assume duties on September 10.
Cologne reports Belgian forces have seized Hervest-Dorsten on the Lippe River and pushed to Holsterhausen with control of the Furst Leopold and Baldur mines and the Hervest-Dorsten mine on the express line to Holland. A Duisburg report states forty more Germans have been arrested, to ride trains as sabotage guarantees.
The Belgian and French replies to the British reparations note arrived at Quay d Orsay and will be delivered to the British Foreign Office tomorrow. Premier Poincaré, resting at Sampigny, learned of the Belgian draft adjustments by telephone. The two governments reportedly agree in principle on leading points, with no negotiations with Germany before end of its passive resistance and Ruhr evacuation tied to payment settlements proposed by Belgium.
Berlin July 29 Anti Fascist Day failed to produce large crowds or major clashes. In Neu Ruppin a communist clash left one dead and six injured while Berlin and other cities held indoor meetings. Reds recruited only small portions of their following due to socialist vetoes and food and money shortages worsened by poor distribution and allotment issues.
German reports say Major Zormack and Lieutenants Keller and Knuth former Essen policemen were sentenced to death by a French court-martial in Verdun for espionage. They allegedly ran a dictograph near a French officer's villa. A Swiss director of the Dortmund Verein, M. Schreiber, was provisionally released. Communist demonstrations in Duesseldorf failed as residents ignored reparations issues.
