New York police lieutenant Charles Becker was arrested for first degree murder after Jack Rose confessed Becker ordered Herman Rosenthal killed. Webber and Walton corroborated. DA Whitman and grand jury acted swiftly, with Rose describing Becker's protection of the hit team and connections to gang leader Zelig.

Washington July The house considered a resolution by Rep McCall to obtain State Department information on alleged slavery and peonage in the Amazon district of Peru. The measure, referencing Sir Roger Casement's Putumayo report, was sent to the foreign affairs committee as Peru pledged to stop the atrocities and cooperate with Britain on reforms.
The senate approved a joint resolution authorizing the war department to supply tents for American refugees from Mexico at El Paso. A mayoral telegram said 2,500 Americans would arrive within 24 hours and El Paso lacked facilities to care for them. General Salazar warned rebels planned to force U S intervention, but Colonel Steever noted Salazar did not represent General Ozorio, who opposed intervention. The state department maintains neutrality with regard to Mexico’s rebellion.
Reports from Zanesville Ohio indicate Howard Chandler Christy and his former wife are near reconciliation. Mrs Christy visits daughter Natalie at Duncans Falls near the villa outside the village and may attend a weekend party hosted by Mary Roberts Rinehart at Hare Hall Sewickley Pennsylvania.
Charles Kelly, a Lucas county inmate serving a one year burglary sentence, was found Sunday peddling meat from the subsistence department to fellow prisoners. Investigators uncovered stoves and two homemade refrigerators as the prison abandons the contract labor system. Kelly, age 41, faces solitary confinement and a December 14 release date.
Columbus dispatch reports the Ohio Republican Party faces a deep split after Judge Edmond B. Dillon withdraws as governor candidate. With Dillon gone the party foresees a third Roosevelt ticket and avoids immediate renomination. Taft and Roosevelt factions blame each other as committee actions delay a successor. Plans emerge for a Bull Moose line and possible petition tickets to maximize Roosevelt presence.
