City county and state agents prepare to confer with grand jurors and accelerate investigations. Authorities seek to curb profiteers and hoarders under existing laws as four agencies map a 10 point strategy.
State county and city officials will meet with the grand jury to launch a combined investigation of food hoarding and profiteering. Governor Cox spurs other states to action as officials plan a broad inquiry into wartime price manipulation and the egg market, with Inspector McWilliams and Mayor Galvin among those testifying.
The grand jury may inspect cold storage and other warehouses in Ohio with state officials, considering a weekly reporting plan to the Attorney General and possible federal aid. The probe may follow a dumped carload of peaches and explore storage compliance and a potential food tax proposal.

Allen McCoy Sr died from wounds after a 1913 Carranzista attack in Ayutla Jalisco. his family injured. Other victims: Miguel Otto in Sonora in 1919, C C Pottenger near El Paso in 1915, C M Saule in Durango in 1915, and Wright killed by Villistas in Chihuahua as his wife looked on.

Washington July 28 Counselor Debuchi of the Japanese embassy told the State Department that Japan aims to restore to China its sovereignty over Kiaochow and will negotiate this at once. He said the Tsingtao railway and port would open to joint China Japan operation with an international settlement, and Japan will withdraw all troops in Shantung as soon as practicable. He noted final dispositions depend on Germany’s peace treaty and China Japan agreement.
Baltimore archaeologist William Gates told the House Rules Committee that Carranza’s rule in Mexico is not a government but an outlaw regime. He criticized U S recognition of Carranza, cited his first hand study since 1917, and alleged German influence and Carranza propaganda shaping American press reporting. He accused Carranza forces of shooting at will along ports and rail lines, and suggested private interests influence U S policy.
Bob Hopkins, a sixty year old moonshiner long wanted on bootlegging charges, was arrested near Osborn's Gap in Bucanan County Virginia after years of operation across the mountains into Kentucky. Government agents endured years of snares and a recent raid ended with a fierce stand off. Hopkins is jailed and to be tried early next month. He was one of the most noted shiners of the border mountains.
