Six autoists killed as train strikes car near Alexis

A Lake Shore & Michigan Southern train hit a nine passenger car at a grade crossing near Alexis Michigan. Six people died instantly and two others died later in hospital with several injured. The field obstructed view contributed to the tragedy as bodies lay along the track and victims were rushed to the hospital.

One Killed In Auto Wreck In Columbus

An automobile skidded into a ditch in Columbus injuring Herman G. Denison and William S. Stimson while David Westwater was killed, caught under the car. A tire explosion caused the skid. Two other occupants were slightly hurt.

Hearse Horses Run Amok at Erie Cemetery Tragedy

In Erie on July 28 a hearse horsesled team broke loose during Otto Meyn funeral. They overturned the hearse, toppled headstones, knocked mourners into graves, and dumped the casket into grass as the minister prepared for rites. Meyn’s parents narrowly escaped injury.

In Sharleton West Virginia a large unrest flares as miners urge a Paint Creek march to drive out guards. Militia and Army units are redeployed with 225 soldiers ordered to Paint Creek and 400 on scene including a Peytona detachment. A bookkeeper, James Roberts, was shot in Chelyan amid warrants and looming hearings.

The Canadian Pacific steamship Empress of Britain, outward bound, blasted into the collier Helvetia in dense fog on the St Lawrence estuary. Helvetia sank while Empress of Britain, badly damaged, turned back toward Quebec with passengers aboard.
