A Lake Shore & Michigan Southern train hit a nine passenger car at a grade crossing near Alexis Michigan. Six people died instantly and two others died later in hospital with several injured. The field obstructed view contributed to the tragedy as bodies lay along the track and victims were rushed to the hospital.
An automobile skidded into a ditch in Columbus injuring Herman G. Denison and William S. Stimson while David Westwater was killed, caught under the car. A tire explosion caused the skid. Two other occupants were slightly hurt.
In Erie on July 28 a hearse horsesled team broke loose during Otto Meyn funeral. They overturned the hearse, toppled headstones, knocked mourners into graves, and dumped the casket into grass as the minister prepared for rites. Meyn’s parents narrowly escaped injury.
Tokyo reports the emperor’s condition is critical with unconsciousness from dawn. High fever and weak pulse mark a rapid decline despite artificial life support. Crown prince and imperial family stay at the palace as officials warn of a long recovery.
The Cunarder Lusitania was held up five hours in the Irish Sea and did not leave Queenstown until 12 45 PM. Marconi, the wireless expert aboard, disembarked at Queenstown and will sail on the Mauretania on August 4.
The sermon at St Peter's Episcopal Church by Rev George Chalmers Richmond of Old St Johns Philadelphia criticized social excess and the turkey trot. He warned against Newports idlers and worldlings from Easter to Thanksgiving, drawing on the Head of John the Baptist as his text.
In Lexington on July 28 a mob of Black residents near Paris Pike attacked a milk car crew after finding the body of Will Ferrill. Motorman Wilbur Stone and Conductor Frank Taylor said they learned the dairy car had struck Ferrill on the Elmendorf dairy line, prompting arrests and confessions from several involved.
In Sharleton West Virginia a large unrest flares as miners urge a Paint Creek march to drive out guards. Militia and Army units are redeployed with 225 soldiers ordered to Paint Creek and 400 on scene including a Peytona detachment. A bookkeeper, James Roberts, was shot in Chelyan amid warrants and looming hearings.
The Canadian Pacific steamship Empress of Britain, outward bound, blasted into the collier Helvetia in dense fog on the St Lawrence estuary. Helvetia sank while Empress of Britain, badly damaged, turned back toward Quebec with passengers aboard.
Droror fororor on Mackinac Island Michigan July 28 reports that E B Dillon resigns as Republican nominee for governor. He states the party failed to unite and he will place his resignation with the state central committee when it meets in Columbus next Wednesday.
London July 28 Lady Constance Stewart-Richardson, famed for barefoot Greek style dances, is set to perform the Salomé dance at a major London charity show. She recently appeared at a Stafford House charity and sold goods from stalls. She has been engaged by Oscartaining to promote Scotch industry products.
In Atlantic City July special dispatch, Pennsylvania girls embrace knit knee socks as a cheaper bath accessory for pannier gowns. The sox sell for about half the price of full stockings and are worn with garters for knee support, aiding swimming while inviting skepticism about private bathing machines.
Judge E. B. Dillon resigns as Republican nominee for Ohio governor triggering a party crisis. The state central committee meets to choose a successor likely to align with Roosevelt or Taft factions, risking unity and the November ticket.
