In a close finish the defender crossed first with Shamrock a mile behind as Resolute claimed the cup. The race concluded amid crowded scenes and celebratory cheers.
Defending yacht Resolute defeats Shamrock IV by 19 minutes 45 seconds after a tight 30 mile course in light winds. Sir Thomas Lipton congratulates the winner and vows another challenge in 1922.
Mrs. Esther Muller Blake, once jailed for killing her son in Atlantic City, shows marked mental improvement after removal of decayed molars. Dr. Henry A. Cotton, medical director, says tooth extraction alleviates insanity in many cases and believes she may be eventually cured. The Philadelphia wife was confined at the State Hospital for the Insane in Trenton.
An earthquake lasting about two seconds at 1:35 pm rattled buildings in Los Angeles with no damage reported. Earlier at 12:02 am a sharp shock rattled downtown windows and awakened County Jail prisoners who called for release. Guests in hotels were alarmed but reassured.
Cincinnati reports its first clerical strike at the First National Bank as transit department clerks walk out to protest the discharge of three men linked to the Bank Employees Union No. 17,394. Union claims sixty walked out. bank vice president says twenty to thirty, with no expected impact on business.
Cincinnati detectives arrest Robert Williams 38 of 315 East Fourth street after observing him sell two small drug packages to an addict in a Fifth street restaurant. Officials say more narcotics were found hidden in a tobacco bag and a marked two dollar bill was recovered. Williams is held for federal authorities.
A dispute between two Black undertakers over who could embalm a deceased man was settled after police intervention and a ruling by Judge William Lueders of Probate Court. William Monroe died at 1224 Dewey Avenue. dying wish named Copeland as embalmers. Both undertakers claimed priority and were ordered to proceed, with further court appearance required.
Frank Bohlen and John Burne return from a Kentucky bathing trip on the Ohio River to find their clothing and shoes stolen from lockers. A party of seven men led by Robert Harris pursued on a motor car toward the L. and N. Bridge stopping passing cars for possible leads.
Premier Lloyd George and Millerand stuck to the plan for a peace conference with the Russian soviets. They endorsed Millerand's views on the coal agreement with Germany and decided Britain would reply that the international conference cannot occur until Bolsheviks agree to discuss peace with Poland and allow all qualified Russian and border state representatives to attend.
London reports highlight Tchitcherin's peace conference idea differing from Curzon's Spa plan. The Soviet proposal favors a meeting with the leading entente powers potentially drawing in the United States. An official Moscow communique says Bolsheviks occupy Brody in Galicia and report widespread successes along the line.
Vienna reports the Soviet military command cannot meet before July 30 with Polish representatives for an armistice. The reasons are widespread Polish acts of barbarity provoking public anger and the need for extensive troop movements to prepare the meeting.
General Ludendorff contends in a memorandum that Soviet victory over Poland would trigger a westward Bolshevik advance threatening all of Europe and eventually the world. He warns that Poland’s fall would topple Germany and Czecho Slovakia and pull in Italy France and England. He cites Lenin's expansion toward China Afghanistan Persia India and rising anti Christian pan Islamism as evidence of the growing menace.
Columbus July 27 Wild game in Ohio especially rabbits and pheasants is more plentiful than in years due to wildlife sanctuaries set up last September. Reports to A C Baxter Chief of the Bureau of Fish and Game from game protectors across the state say the sanctuaries were created mainly to increase hunting supplies and results have been remarkable.
Five persons were killed and one seriously injured when an automobile carrying the Jaukstis family and Frank I. Wanoskas was struck by a freight train at a crossing near Michigan City Indiana. The dead include Mr and Mrs Peter Jaukstis and their two children Victoria and Frank and Adolph Jaukstis. Mrs John Jaukstis of Chicago was seriously hurt.
Lon Moore of Defiance Ohio died and Charles Hite of Ironton Ohio was badly injured when their auto rolled off a 200 foot Bear Creek Canyon cliff near Denver. Three Denver residents suffered serious injuries in the crash. A taxicab driver, William Hart, and his wife were among those in the front seats. Witnesses said the vehicle swerved and slid toward the edge of the precipice.
In Winfield Kansas Grace Wilson is arraigned on first degree murder charges in the death of her husband Homer S. Wilson. She pleads not guilty and is held without bond for a premilitary hearing. Ranchmen Charles Ridgeway and Edward Glass back her claim.
The first transcontinental air mail route from New York to San Francisco is slated to begin the first week of September with Part of the route ending at Omaha. Landing fields and hangars in Cheyenne Salt Lake City and Reno are to be completed to enable operation. J M Larson will lead a reconnaissance flight photographing the route and identifying landing fields.
Judge C B Ames resigns from the Justice Department effective August 3 after serving since 1919 as assistant to the attorney general and lead on the coal strike injunctions. He will return to Oklahoma City to practice law and has overseen major anti trust actions and key negotiations in the meat packing case.
Governor Coolidge on July 27 formally accepting the Republican nomination urged a return to peace and constitutional government while praising woman suffrage as nonpartisan. He spoke from a Smith College field as thousands gathered, with an airplane showering flowers and a loud ovation at end.
Senator Harding would revise the Treaty of Versailles to secure League of Nations reservations acceptable to the United States and other nations. He favors removing Article X and preserving U S sovereignty while pursuing international peace through justice rather than force. Governor Coolidge signals ratification with reservations.
At Saratoga Springs the Republican State Convention organized under David Jayne Hill of Rochester as temporary chair. Delegates showed harmony but debated backing Nathan L. Miller for Governor, with Jesse Phillips and Wesley Howard proposed as compromises. Hill praised Roosevelt and attacked Wilson and the League of Nations as Harding and Coolidge were cheered. The session opened with women among early attendees and adjourned to reconvene at 10 a.m. tomorrow.
On board the Victoria Sir Thomas Lipton, watching Resolute defeat Shamrock IV, says he was beaten by a better boat. Lipton praises fair racing, vows to return in 1922, and hopes the effort brings Americans and Britons closer.
