Senator Pettus Dies in Hot Springs at 86
United States Senator Edmund Pettus of Alabama died at Hot Springs North Carolina at 10 p m after a breakfast table stroke He was 86 and had celebrated his Tate Springs birthday last week Funeral plans list burial in Selma with services likely Tuesday or Wednesday Pettus served ten years in the Senate and was a Confederate Army veteran born July 6 1821 in Limestone County Alabama He practiced law in Alabama and Dallas County and held several offices before joining the Senate in 1897 He was chairman of the Alabama delegation to Democratic National Conventions and was re elected to the Senate in 1903

Southern Railroad To Put Lower Rate Into Effect
A conference in Raleigh between Governor Glenn and railroad officials reached an amicable settlement over the state rate law. The Southern Railway and Atlantic Coast Line will implement the 2 1/4 cent rate by August 8 1907 and pursue further court actions as agreed. Both sides will cooperate to advance cases, with indictments and prosecutions limited until the new rate is in effect.
