A July thunderstorm swept Columbus and northern Ohio with a 64 mile per hour wind front, tearing roofs and signs from buildings, toppling trees, flooding streets, and causing widespread damage across the city. Delaware and Cleveland reported effects as well.
A destructive train and wind storm cut telegraph service on the Columbus Sandusky and Hocking line delaying traffic. The cupola of St Marys Church was twisted and a twenty foot cross fell through the roof. Streetcar service halted by lightning and the arc circuit cut leaving the city in darkness. Losses run into thousands.
A violent wind storm at Beulah Park east of Cleveland wrecked eight or nine houses and a large tabernacle. Loss runs into thousands of dollars as Major Stockman of the local weather bureau reports winds at 64 miles per hour.
A severe storm hit Lima Ohio damaging trees and small buildings while communications were knocked out. The extent of damage beyond the city is unknown due to downed wires.
Scioto River at Circleville Ohio topped yesterday noon, then fell rapidly leaving farmers along the river devastated. Some fields lost a full year's labor to the floodwaters.
The southbound evening train on the Short Line was held up near Fauser eight miles north of Bucyrus as wind felled trees blocking the track. Telegraph wires in the district are down and no communication is possible.
A severe rainstorm at 4 PM in Claypool Indiana flooded the countryside turning fields into a lake. The Big Four railroad track was submerged for miles and crops suffered notable damage from the inundation.

Through passenger and freight traffic resumed on all divisions of the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad tonight. Trains ran at long nearly schedule time with service returning to normal in Parkerburg and surrounding regions.
Special Dispatch to Commercial Tribune Frankfort Ind July 27 James Byers agent for Vandalia Railroad and Williams Express Company at Moran committed death by his own action this morning He owed 600 to the excess company and 1 to the railroad and to avoid exposure killed himself He visited his fiancee last night and told her he was in trouble at 1 am he bade her farewell then a shot was heard and his body was found near the door with a bullet in the brain He was twenty three years old and was regarded as popular and well behaved.
Telegrapher Sullivan, of Columbus, married Miss Nellie Maroney of Cincinnati ten days ago in a quiet ceremony after her visit to Columbus. Miss Maroney, sister-in-law of W J Elliott, former editor and owner of the Columbus Sunday Capital, traveled back to Cincinnati with Sullivan following the wedding.
Ben Lepper of Warsaw struck Warren Froman of Vevay on the steamer Telegraph below Vevay. Lepper, clerk of the Hattie Brown, faced assault charges on a wharfboat trial, pleaded guilty, paid his fine, and the boat continued upriver toward Cincinnati.
Rumor in Republican circles says Gov. Bradley will appoint John W. Yerkes of Danville to succeed Senator Blackburn if the Legislature cannot elect. The move would prompt a Senate contest to decide the succession.
In Columbus Indiana on July 27 Alex Bell a horse thief and Sim Bryant a burglar kicked Jailer Hull during dinner breaking jail. Bloodhounds were dispatched to track them that night. Bell previously served seven years in the penitentiary.
William Henry Smith died at his Lake Forest home after pneumonia. A Cincinnati Gazette and Associated Press veteran, he served as Secretary of State of Ohio, managed Western Associated Press, and helped consolidate AP systems. He authored The St Clair Papers and a biography of Charles Hammond. Funeral set for 8:15 Wednesday.
Romulus Cotell, the Summit County triple murderer, was received at the penitentiary in Columbus under a sentence of hanging on November 6. He protests his innocence despite confessing at arrest. Ronnie Cotell dressed early and welcomed the change headed to Columbus for execution or possible new trial, cheerful and not worried as crowds gathered.
In Bloomington Indiana at 1 o clock today David White and William Spaulding two colored men fought after White, intoxicated, began abusing Spaulding. White stabbed Spaulding in the abdomen. Spaulding then cut White’s throat from ear to ear. White died shortly after. Spaulding is in critical condition and is an old soldier.
James Morris of Liberty Township is jailed on a charge of assaulting Thomas Gregory’s five year old daughter. He is bound over to the grand jury as threats of lynching circulate in Jackson Ohio.
Congress battles erupted after lawmakers refused to seat anarchists, triggering protests and political tension across the capital. Authorities moved to restore order as debates over party affiliations and constitutional seating rules intensified.
Delegates clash as the International Socialist Trade and Labor Union Congress opens in St Martin's Town Hall London. An anarchist faction disrupts proceedings with repeated attempts to storm the platform and noisy scenes. Police readiness to eject future disruptors noted.
In DHLAWARD July 27 Sheriff Thrall faced Frank McCoy awaiting burglary trial. McCoy resisted a supper change and fought officers with stones, injuring the sheriff and deputy who subdued him.
James Bachman aged sixteen accidentally shot his ten year old sister Mattie in the right shoulder with a thirty two calibre revolver in Plymouth Indiana. He had just taken the weapon from a shelf and believed it unloaded. The girl may die.
Shelbyville Indiana July 27 Frank Carthers this morning while dressing crossed his leg to tie his shoe. In some ways the leg was broken four inches below the hip.
L A Sherwood, the alleged Illinois bigamist, faced his ninth trial in Lexington Kentucky within a week. He was arrested last Monday on bigamy and fugitive from justice charges, dismissed, then re-arrested and retried multiple times. Governor Bradley issued requisition papers for his return to Illinois and Sheriff Knox took him into custody, with further habeas corpus actions and a $10 000 lawsuit filed by Sherwood's attorney against Knox.
Thomas McKee was arrested by Detective Schlessinger of Cincinnati and charged with authoring recent outrages in Portsmouth Ohio. A special guard is posted at the city jail as McKee proclaims innocence.
Delegates from multiple nations caused chaos in a hall, with tables stood on, arms waving, and women reporters fleeing in fear. Police threat and a closing shout ended the disruptive session as delegates spilled into the street.

In New York on July 27 a committee of seven from exchange banks presented a plan to stop gold exports for the next ninety days. The full body unanimously adopted the plan and it takes effect immediately. Deposits at the Sub-Treasury total $375,000, raising the grand total to $18,015,000.
Washington reports the U S Treasury reserve expanded by 1 145 million in coin with 400 thousand from Boston 250 thousand from Chicago and 495 thousand from New York. A withdrawal of 129 100 in gold coin and 5 400 in bars left the reserve at 105 073 919 at close of business.
Comptroller Fitch offered 400000 in gold bonds at 3percent interest with bids lagging. Only a little over a quarter of the amount attracted bids. Bonds sold near 104 at the last sale and went to Muller & Co of Wall Street who then refused to honor the bid. Bids today ranged from par to 104.

In Brookville Indiana July 27 Protestant ministers hold services in a park or the High School campus to avoid indoor heat. Meetings are scheduled to end in early twilight and have proved satisfactory.
Congressman A B Berry of Kentucky visits the Treasury and War Departments to press river improvement needs. The river and harbor bill provides 83000 for the seventh Kentucky River lock and dam, with engineers promising immediate availability and completion this summer. Berry also to help select a site for Newport public buildings.
Chief of the Consular Bureau Chilton concludes a close inspection of U S consulates. Demands resignations for Consul Thatcher at Windsor Ont and Henry C Smith at Santos Brazil. Reasons cited include inattention to duty improper personal habits and failure to observe consular regulations.

McKee, an ex school teacher from Ironton who came to the city three years ago, is described as quarrelsome and evasive. He allegedly deserted his wife and three children eight years ago, and his trouble in town began with alleged relations involving a daughter. He is about 40, fleet of foot, wary, and has repeatedly outrun police, with authorities viewing him as a suspect in cases involving women at the bottom.
In the House of Commons, Foreign Office figure George Curzon said the Venezuelan statement has not arrived at the Government, though it is en route from Washington and will be laid before Parliament on arrival. Otho Williams a wealthy Delaware farmer went to salt cattle on his Berkshire farm when a Jersey bull attacked him forcing him to climb a tree where he hid for hours until rescue. The bull owned by neighbor Howard Domigan was ordered killed after the incident. It had previously attacked Mrs Williams in her dooryard, suggesting a grudge against the family.
Walter Keckler a barber died at the Findlay police station from morphine after leaving his home where his child had died. He had been drinking to cope with the illness and fled the house after his child’s death, later collapsing in the street and passing away at the station.
Lawrenceburg Indiana July 27 Richard Sterling also known as Dick Corrigan and Alice Sweezy of Aurora were arrested on improper conduct charges. They were married at the courthouse by Squire Probst and placed in jail to await the next court term.
The Standard raised Lima and Indiana oil by one cent and Pennsylvania by three cents. North Lima now at 69c, South Lima and Indiana at 54c, Pennsylvania at $1.08.
News from Gotham town reports Chairman Hanna to convene an Executive Committee meeting with Quay Clayton and Manley as possible participants while Hobart may join. Ex-President Harrison and wife arrive at Fifth Avenue Hotel amid questions of envoy rumors, stating support for McKinley.
I M Coffee president of the State Board of Pharmacy was murdered by Dr Crabtree a prominent druggist in front of Crabtree store while on way to the depot Cr abtree was arrested. Coffee had recently clashed with him and previously worked in Coffee's store before opening his own shop.
John Parsons found his mother dead in a pool of blood at her Kentucky home with a pistol nearby. A daughter-in-law, involved in recent trouble with the old lady, is suspected. Officials investigate as burial plans are made in Catlettsburg.
William C. Garlow, a noted bogus check artist, was sentenced to six years in the penitentiary by Judge Hughes in Wheeling West Virginia. In under four months Garlow and a partner who escaped netted about $3 000 in small sums from local business men.
The Populists struggle to decide their course for the state convention. Some favor endorsing Shively with a Democratic ticket, while others push for a straight Populist ticket. A mediating proposal from John H. Brunt hints at a full fusion plan, but delegates adjourn at midnight without action.
