A riot in Dublin leaves three men and one woman dead and over sixty wounded as troops from the King's Own Scottish Borderers fire on a mob during a arms seizure. Nationalist Volunteers and civilian partisans clashed after a cache of rifles and ammunition landed at Howth. Further riots feared.
Dublin authorities dispatched sixty police to seize the landed arms. They were later reinforced by 200 officers under an assistant commissioner. The force formed lines as the operation proceeded.
St Petersburg and Moscow under martial law. A decree bans publishing army and navy details for a year. Censorship covers mobilization, reservists, officer movements, and even spy sentences. Unauthorized flights near borders barred. Servian officers return home amid rising Slavic demonstrations as Russia considers intervention. German relations tense with possible Emperor mediation.
Dispatches from Vienna and Belgrade say Austria is the aggressor in the Servia dispute. General Radomir Putnik, Servian army chief of staff, was captured in Hungary with four aides while en route to Belgrade to assume command. His daughter was sent to a hotel as Servia rejects Austrian terms and severs diplomatic relations. The Servian Premier Pashich protested terms clashing with national honor. Servian troops, shown marching, are deemed ready for Teutonic steel.
Rome reports Italy has not taken military steps over the Austria Servian crisis. The French Ambassador Barbere had talks with Premier Orlando while the foreign minister is away.
Edward Krampe 40 of Mt. Auburn shot and killed Harry Roesener 45 at Krampe home after Roesener, a married man, visited Krampe’s sister-in-law Ida Feltman 25 a divorcee. Krampe confessed claiming he protected his sister-in-law from a married man. Police arrived with Dr. Majewewsky pronouncing death. motive linked to alleged affair. Roesener left wife and two daughters. Feltman identified as visitor now key witness.
The Commercial Tribune reports London July 26 that Europe hinges on whether Russia will intervene to aid its Slav ally. Secrecy in Austria and Russia blocks knowledge of military preparations while St Petersburg papers suggest intervention is seen as inevitable by popular sentiment.
Washington dispatch reports General Carranza reluctant to grant amnesty before taking power in Mexico City. Provisional President Carba jal urged amnesty before power shifts. U S pressures for guarantees and lives of Huerta supporters. Carranza's envoy Silliman notes doubts on amnesty stance. Continuation referenced.
