A Chicago court holds Frederick S. Mordant in bond on abduction charges after a dramatic appearance by a young woman who identifies him as her admirer. The witness, Miss Bibel, and Miss Selwood accompany her as evidence ties Mordant to past indecencies with underage girls. The case is adjourned to August 6 for further proceedings.
William Ziegler Jr. is deemed entitled to nearly 5 million dollars in accumulated interest from his foster father the baking powder king, a ruling challenged by his father George W. Brandt and executors. The will allocates income until 21 then full access at 21, with further principal shares at ages 25 30 35 40. The surrogate notes the testator intended the son to receive the accumulated interest at majority.
Washington reports that the Nicaragua treaty discussion centers on weakening Platt like provisions and prevents foreign entanglements. Secretary Bryan indicated the United States will modify the language to avoid obligating itself to Nicaragua debts and to support a possible Central American union. In Tampa on July 26, Mrs. Avelina Rodriguez, a young Cuban, tied her sleeping husband to the bed, shot him dead, then shot herself and died beside him. Police cite domestic troubles as the motive.
OSSINING N Y July 2 The new year at Sing Sing Prison under Warden Clancy saw former Warden John Kennedy meet in the village amid ongoing rebellion. Kennedy and associate George Jenkins indicated outside support would not aid the revolt as 350 inmates remained confined and a second large draft to Auburn was anticipated.
Public Health Bulletin report by Surgeon Victor G. Heiser quantifies Manila’s rat population at about 150 000 with a five year life. He estimates 2 500 rat deaths monthly and notes few rats die in hidden spots or sewers as bodies seemingly vanish by unknown natural means.

A banker furnished $2,000 bond and he was released. The mail pouch had been taken from a car at the Kansas City Union Depot.
Norton Co. Maines, 66, was struck by an Ohio Electric Interurban car near Zanesville Ohio tonight and killed. He had left to visit his sister and the accident occurred within sight of her house.
