U S experts warn the Allied effort faces a drawnout war as the collapse of the Russian drive would free German forces to reinforce the Western Front and pressure Allied lines.
A Washington dispatch argues that Russian collapse may shift German strength to the Western Front. It notes uncertain prospects for a decisive Allied push and stresses the immense logistical and naval effort the United States would need to mount a major offensive to topple German defenses along the Belgian coast.
James Cameron a bagpiper with the McLean Kitties of New Brunswick was sentenced to front line service for polygamy. He pleaded guilty after a marriage to Beatrice E. Caswell prompted a court case. Cameron was ordered to return to Frederickton to rejoin the regiment and go to the front.

An emissary from eight Western state governors, led by George L. Bell of San Francisco, met President Wilson to urge federal action on I W W disturbances. Ferdinand Ott 60 prominent druggist at Sixth and Vine streets Northern Kentucky died of heart failure at his store Wednesday night found unconscious behind the counter. He previously led the Ohio Valley Druggists Association and served on its Pure Food Committee for an August Chester Park show. He was a Dayton Red Cross director and a Mason and Shriner. He leaves a widow a daughter aged 19 and two brothers.
Emma Goldman left the penitentiary in Jefferson City Missouri after serving two weeks of a two year sentence for opposing the draft law. She was freed on a $25 000 bond provided by anarchist societies pending approval to the United States Supreme Court. Deputy United States Marshal Whalen will accompany her to New York today.
In Dayton court Judge Hoffman sentenced Dr. Lawrence M. Spitzlberger to three months in the Workhouse and a $500 fine for contributing to the delinquency of a girl under 18. Lulu Pettit of 408 John Street received a $5 fine. the case involved officers arresting Spitzlberger at Pettit’s house. Spitzlberger, a Dayton Ky physician of 502 Clay Street, denied the accusation and requested time to file a motion for a new trial.
The transpacific steamer Wairuna of 1904 tons net and a crew of about forty is thirty days overdue from Auckland to a Pacific port from New Zealand. Agents say the vessel is disabled and drifting with a likely long idle period before potential rescue.
