The Swedish cabinet resigned after a Riksdag committee report on the Norway crisis. A plebiscite, neutral zone, and reduction of fortifications are proposed. Norway might accept a referendum and a dissolution of the union could proceed with terms including frontier zone fortifications and Nordic transit safeguards.
Six severely injured sailors linger between life and death after the Bennington boiler explosion. Naval Constructor Evans reports no hull leaks and repairs to internal pipes. Plans include exterior hull inspection, securing boilers, and towing the ship to Mare Island with an escort as the Navy reviews the incident.
United States Senator Mitchell faces a jail term as the sentence is set to be handed down. The case centers on alleged misconduct involving the senator.
Five men escaped from the Coshocton County Jail, with three still at large. The group includes Frank Gorman and George Haughran, plus John Blackmore, Adam Potter, and Punch Wilan. Gorman and Haughran were later found near Love’s Falls. Potter and Wilan were cornered in a 100 acre cornfield six miles from Coshocton as deputies guard the area.
In Lima Ohio on July 25 the boiler makers at the C H D general shops were informed their request for a two cent hourly raise has been approved. The new rate becomes thirty cents per hour, the highest on the system, and applies also to terminal shops in Wellston Dayton Cincinnati Toledo and other points.
Mrs. Sarah Stevenson of Deshler returns from New York City after meeting William Pierce of Bryantville Mass. They did not agree to wed. The widow, with nine year old daughter and wedding finery, declines marriage but gives Pierce a kiss before returning to Ohio.
Frank J. Pool special agent of the Bureau of Corporations arrived in Indianapolis to investigate the business methods of the Standard Oil Company in Indiana.
The Shah of Persia fainted briefly from heat while shopping in Paris today. The episode passed without serious injury, the dispatch reports, noting the ruler recovered promptly.
Baron Komura peace envoy arrives in New York and states Japan will seek indemnity from Russia and press for an immediate end to the war at Portsmouth peace talks. Aimar Sato says negotiations will follow moderation, with emphasis on peace and humanity. He notes costs of war to Japan at about 1 million dollars daily and Russia losses.
A July 25 bulletin from the State Board of Health shows 154 yellow fever cases and 32 deaths since July 13. Two more deaths were reported today. About twenty cases remain under treatment. The Advisory Board begins active work to locate new foci and coordinate sanitation. Detention camps are planned along railroad lines with trained staff. A new quarantine plan will isolate New Orleans and nearby areas to ease existing regional quarantines.
Dr Henry Goldthwaite of the Mobile Bay Quarantine Board described the Colombia's case as precautionary. Four crew members were isolated at the screened hospital. no yellow fever diagnosis was made. The ship was unloaded under police and medical inspection, then sent to Ship Island Quarantine Station sixty miles west in the Gulf.

Samuel E J Watterson 50, a Clark Street boxmaker, shot himself at St Joseph Cemetery Price Hill while painting a cross on his wife Catherine's grave. He had visited weekly for months, praying beside her grave after her death last May, leaving six children and a small inheritance to his descendants.
After over thirty hours of balloting across multiple counties the Republican convention at New Lexington adjourned at 4:15 PM with 1 168 ballots cast and no nominee for Senator from the Fifteenth Sixteenth District. Delegations from Muskingum Perry Delaware and Licking debated swapping votes until an Olentangy Park meeting August 8 was set.
In Mississippi on July 25 a mob of about fifty men seized Will Harris from a Yazoo Valley train at Black Bayou and hanged him near the railroad. Harris and his brother Henry had earlier attacked two white men on the James plantation, drawing a county posse into pursuit. Henry Harris was fatally struck during the chase, while Will Harris was taken from an officer and killed by the mob as the train carried him toward Tallahatchie County.
Rev. W H Greenawalt of New Paris plans to relocate to Milford this week after receiving a warning to move. He led a temperance remonstrance against saloons and recalls past arson threats against remonstrators. His car was damaged and vandals struck at night.
Annie M. Grant of Chicago was tried at Old Bailey after being committed for trial on July 6 for stealing a neck lace valued at $10,000 from Christie’s. She was convicted and sentenced to three years of penal servitude.
