Hoover proclaims the Kellogg Briand treaty renouncing war at a White House ceremony with 46 envoys and key officials present. Britain suspends naval construction as MacDonald also signals delays in shipbuilding amid praise for the pact and international law advance.
In Ashland City Tennessee on July 24 Jesse Neal stabbed Jack Farrell after a dispute over dance calls during a moonlight picnic. Farrell shouted for fiddlers and partners while Neal objected. Neal stabbed Farrell, who was seriously injured. Both men were released on bond and set for a preliminary hearing Friday.
St Louis July 26. The St Louis Robin crew led by Del Jackson and Forest O Brine push toward 300 hours of sustained flight as they chase endurance records in a monoplane at Lambert Field. They aim for 500 hours with $110 per hour gained beyond the Angeleno record, having logged 282 hours by 1 17 a.m. and flown over 16 000 miles with over 2300 gallons used.
Seven jurors including four women and three men were seated for the trial of Dr James H Snook former Ohio State professor charged with murdering co ed Theora K Hix. Nineteen of seventy five jurors were examined as peremptory challenges loom and state witnesses are called for trial day ten.
Prime Minister Ramsay MacDonald announced in the House of Commons a definite pause in naval construction, suspending work on the cruisers Surrey and Newfoundland not, canceling the Maidstone submarine depot ship, and slowing dockyard projects. He plans a U S visit in October to confer with President Hoover as parity is agreed and a general conference of powers urged. Ambassador Dawes attended the session as the plan outlined to advance disarmament.
Rome crowds gather in St Peter’s Square for the Pope’s first outing since 1870. About 250000 are expected as the procession forms from the Basilica with heralds, bells, and a host case valued at 15000 dollars. Security includes 15000 soldiers and police, barriers to limit access once capacity is reached.
Miss Rose Rush, 31, was found unconscious after a night in the city. In police reports Loren Harvey, driver of the Davis taxicab, and Richard Yeatman, son of Brig. Gen. Yeatman, face questioning over alleged improper advances and the cab incident. Yeatman posted a 300 bond after admitting advances. he contends Rush jumped from the cab.
President Hoover postpones the construction of three U S cruisers in response to Premier MacDonald's naval curtailments and the Kellogg pact. He says a new era of good will and British American parity will guide disarmament talks and that Britain and the United States will co operate as friends rather than rivals in reducing sea forces.
Col Sherrill City Manager will urge the Police Department to enforce traffic code Section 74-55 after complaints about motorists speeding to enter or exit downtown garages. Pedestrians fear unsafe conditions as garages abut sidewalks and calls for corrective steps rise.
In Tokyo on July 24 the Kellogg renunciation in Washington spurred Manchuria toward peace. Russian and Chinese talks at Changchun and Harbin signaled a possible direct negotiation on the Chinese Eastern Railway. Reports described a temporary truce along the border and a near-complete calm in Manchuria amid fears of further river seizures on the Amur.
Cable Bunn, 19, of Melmore sustained serious internal injuries after a collision near Here today. Also injured were Mr and Mrs Clair Miller and their two children, Francis Bunn age 9, all of Melmore, and Miss Luella Burger of Tiffin.
The City Bond and Improvement Committee met with Irwin M. Krohn and Fred H. Chatfield to trim the Park Board’s proposed next year spending from 500000 to 148000 as it seeks to keep the 22.50 tax rate and avoid raising it. Krohn argued the Park Board has faced decades of limited allocations and persistent claims of imperative needs.
The House of Lords reversed a Scottish court decree that separated Lady Patricia Ross from Sir Charles Ross rifle inventor of Balnagowan Scotland. Sir Charles appealed on misconduct, and the two year case involved Lady Ross daughter of Andrew Ellison Louisville Kentucky and socialite Mrs Emily K L Dalziel in East Africa hunting context.
In Columbus Ohio on July 24 a three year old boy Hastings Potter swallowed a nickel given by his father Ernst Potter of Dayton to buy soda. Dr Charles F Bowen removed the coin from the boy's throat after anesthesia. Hastings later asked Dad for the nickel to buy pop with and was told yes if he kept it out of his mouth.
In Cheyenne on July 24 Governor Frank Emerson rode a bucking horse named for him to open Frontier Day. The appears to have been the first man atop the wild mount, drawing applause as he rode a long distance on the track before dismounting.
In Chicago, the Herald and Examiner reports Edith Mason and Giorgio Polacco, both of the Chicago Civic Opera, may have reconciled after a Saturday divorce. Mason cites a pleasant day and evening together Monday and says there is no reason they cannot remain good friends.
The pelican that fled St James Park last week now perches in various trees across London. The Offices of Works issued catching instructions after warning sportsmen not to shoot, advising a two handed hold to secure the bird while its wings are closed. Police patrols carry sardines as bait, but the timid bird remains aloof in the treetops.
A wireless message reports the Oceanic and Oriental Navigation Company freighter Golden Forest ashore on the northeast end of Tigalda Island in the Eastern Aleutians. The Coast Guard cutter Haida says it expects to reach the freighter within a few hours.
Sergt. Samuel Woodfill once famed for single handedly clearing machine gun nests in the Argonne Forest has become a watchman at Andrews Steel Mills in Newport to pay a mortgage. He started July 15 with a 115 dollar monthly salary and now guards the plant, inspects time clocks, and controls truck entry and exit. He has not yet been sworn in but the ceremony is expected soon. The War Department kept his captain title as a matter of precedent upon return from Europe.
Two boys were drowned and two others were rescued after a boat overturned at Yankee Lake between Warren and Sharon. Victims were Fred Barber 16 of Farrell PA and Chris Domingos 17 of Aliquippa PA. George Weatherstein and Albert Betchie, both of Farrell, were rescued by lifeguard Richard Meade and companions.
Horace Peters, 21, arrested in Richmond after Miss Mabel Van Osdal of Osgood died from wounds allegedly inflicted April 24. Peters, previously charged with assault with intent to kill, had been released on bond to seek treatment for a revolver wound. He reportedly attempted suicide after the shooting.
Max Manne, 40, Cincinnati furniture maker and Alma Pinkerton, 26, his former bookkeeper, clashed in St Louis streets. Pinkerton had sued for 300000 for breach of promise, claiming repeated failed marriage arrangements. Police arrested Manne after he choked her. he bonded out with no statement. Manne heads Artistic Furniture Manufacturing Co.
Lancaster Ohio July 24 The shriek of locomotive whistles once reminded Peter Daubenmire 75 retired farmer of Pleasantville of the night his wife died trying to rescue their daughter at a grade crossing. He killed himself today to join his wife and a boyhood chum whose body he had moved from a potter's field and buried beside his wife.
