President T J Shaffer of the Amalgamated Association visited Wellsville in a worn disguise to observe a strike and prevent violence by ten nonunion workers. He warned that planned actions to trigger riots could justify injunctions against strikers and called for legal, decorous picketing.
Pittsburg reports two bold moves by American Sheet Steel Company officials to break the strike. Nonunion workers are to ship to Wellsville to restart that plant while the Hyde Park mill remains idle but poised to reopen. Union leaders Shaffer and Williams were largely absent from Amalgamated headquarters amid ongoing talks.
Scattered light showers in the Northern tier and Central West give brief relief from extreme heat. No general rain expected in the corn belt soon, with warmth returning Friday. Max temps hit 108 in St. Louis and 104 in St. Paul as heat persists elsewhere.

Elder James Calvin known as The Marrying Parson in Youngstown Ohio marries seventeen couples in a single 24 hour period. The 90 year old officiant drew couples arriving from Pennsylvania on excursion trains and set an unprecedented local record for rapid weddings.
In Middlesboro Kentucky July 24 a report describes a wild woman with long black hair terrorizing Taggett Creek District. She dropped from a tree on John Lane injuring him, chased children with a club, and a search is underway as residents fear leaving homes.
At a large Vienna meeting July 24 shoemakers protest the plan to establish American shoe houses in Vienna. They resolve to send a deputation to the Minister of Commerce and the Provincial Governor to beg interdiction of American firms entering the local shoe trade.
In Marlborough House this morning King Edward presided over a privy council session. Cecil Rhodes was re sworn as a member of the council.
Leavenworth Kansas July 2 Michael Kelly an insane man shot six people at the Robert Garrett Lumber Company office killing one fatally wounding four others and seriously wounding a fifth He was killed by officers after a furious street fight Victims included John R Garrett Dr Charles McGee Police Sergeant Wm Dodge and others Kelly had been seen practicing with a revolver and had threatened to kill Garrett after being released from an asylum
Wabash Indiana July 24 Benjamin Krack an inmate of the Allen County Infirmary died after years of confinement in a violently insane state. The German bachelor once pledged to marry a lass in Germany but she wed another, driving him to emigrate to America to amass property and return. He learned she had married elsewhere, grew despondent and lost his reason, ending his life in the infirmary.
Louisville dispatch reports W J Deboe accusing Kentucky Democrats of Goebelism in election strategy. He claims the Senate may eject Democrats elected under disputed tactics and that Joe Blackburn should not have been seated amid Senate maneuvers.
Special Despatch reports that in Columbus on July 2 a Food Commissioner Blackburn ordered the arrest of five local individuals on charges of using formaldehyde to preserve milk.
Paris Professor Brouardel urges international law to notify authorities of tuberculosis cases and to disinfect hotels, rail cars and ships. He argues meat and milk contamination risks can be reduced by legislation and notes U S progress in expectoration control. He stresses early diagnosis and supports tuberculin use.
The United States Grand Jury opened in New York to investigate the Seventh National Bank collapse. Bank Examiner Forrest Raynor testified as a key witness. a box marked Seventh National Bank was taken into the jury room with papers said to be related to the bank’s status. Ex-President Kimball appeared for an hour and a half, declining to make a statement. Directors announced the bank would not be reorganized, with Cromwell not commenting. Three factions could not reach agreement, complicating the process. Assignee Smith seeks more time to file his brokerage report amid tangled affairs.
A July 23 storm in Schlatzk district Tamboff destroyed crops over a wide area. Three men died and many cattle perished, an entire flock of sheep and two shepherds were carried off by the flood. Some hailstones weighed three pounds.
New York July 24 A sudden discovery of several broken suspension rods on the Brooklyn Bridge halted traffic on the north cable. Police reserves patrolled as crowds gathered, but walking access remained and ferries ferried excess riders. By night, traffic began to resume and officials predicted full service to return within two to three days with repairs from heat-related expansion.
Jen nie Drayton sues William Whitson in Common Pleas Court for 5000 dollars alleging breach of promise. She says Whitson proposed on August 19, 1900, seven days after his wife died, and she eventually agreed to marry after his mourning. He now refuses, prompting the suit.
