Prosecutor Taft accuses illegal modification of the Eighth Street Viaduct pile driving contract. County Engineer E A Gast denies responsibility and says the change saved time while the contractor loses money, with a proposed reduction in piling cost sparking a legal review.
Maj Thomas G Lanphier resigns from the U S Army to Secretary of War. He is expected to join Col Charles A Lindbergh with Transcontinental Air Transport. Lanphier, a prominent army aviation leader, had been slated for Langley Field aviation instructor before leaving. He entered the Air Service in World War I after graduating from West Point in 1914.
Michael Palermo, 35, jailed after an Alderman fined him 25 dollars for killing a horse in McKeesport. Palermo cannot pay, so he is held in jail until the fine is settled. The warden seeks guidance on keeping him imprisoned indefinitely.
The 86 year old Rt. Rev. J. C. Hartzell, retired Methodist Episcopal bishop, was beaten and his home entered in Blue Ash yesterday. Detectives suspect vandalism or persecution as motives, with valuables left untouched except for weapons, while fingerprints were taken and the case investigated by Pete Goldsmith and John Blythe.
William Fox announces Fox Film Company has purchased the Fox Theater Corporation owning twenty motion picture theaters in Massachusetts and Connecticut valued at 26 million dollars. The Poli circuit seats about 45 000 and was built by Sylvester Poli of New Haven over thirty years. Fox sets aside 1 million dollars to install Movietone in all Poli houses.
Beloit Wisconsin July 23 Millions of cisco flies swarmed from Rock River making sidewalks slippery as in winter. Windows were coated and drivers blinded as flies drifted up to a foot and a half deep. Merchants swept as much as two bushels from storefronts.
New York reports a Provincetown trip clears up the Bodenheim case as Dr. Martin J. Loeb retrieves his daughter Gladys. Police say no arrest warrant exists and Loeb declines prosecution while confirming details of Gladys's movements and whereabouts.
Raymond Ratliff 56 an attorney died of heart disease at Good Samaritan Hospital after a period of ill health. Born in Cincinnati he studied at Woodward High School Cincinnati Law School and Harvard Law School. He served as an assistant prosecutor before practicing privately. He was a Mason and is survived by a widow Mrs Lamme Frizelle Ratliff his mother Mrs Mary E Ratliff and brothers Joseph N and Dr T A Ratliff of Grandview Sanitarium Funeral arrangements will be completed today.
Myrtle Huddleston, 30, widow and mother of Everett, collapsed at 5 33 p m after surpassing her endurance record by over four hours in the Metropolitan Pool Bronx. She was rushed to St Francis Hospital and rested easily by night. Attendants and 1 500 spectators witnessed the attempt, which exceeded Lottie Schoemmells outdoor record by more than twenty hours.
A special grand jury probing April's primary election indicated it may examine county and city payrolls to uncover illegal acts. It issued subpoenas for city department and Coroner's office records, plus the Granady inquest files. Prosecutor Loesch said witnesses are being intimidated.
Phillip Baldwin Walker aged 37 killed himself with a revolver in Madison Indiana last night. Friends said he had been low in spirits. He previously lived in Dayton Ohio where he worked as a cost accountant in his father's lithographing plant before moving to Madison three years ago.
The New York American reports that John J. Raskob will sever his official ties with General Motors. He holds the position of Chairman of the Finance Committee of the corporation and serves as Chairman of the Democratic National Committee.
The National Broadcasting Company will broadcast Hoover and Smith acceptance speeches nationwide at no cost to the candidates. Hoover speaks August 11 from Palo Alto and Smith's date will be set by him likely during the week of August 19. The NBC will provide free air time as a public service with fairness and impartiality emphasized.
Four boys Paul Grutzmacher 15 Charles Foote 17 Victor Westerbeck 17 and Earl Rittenhouse 15 are in Juvenile Detention after nine Madisonville home burglaries over two days. Foote and Westerbeck from Great Lakes Naval Station faced robbery and firearms charges. A separate crash on Linn and Mond streets injured five, including Rose McKenzie and Rosemary Geisler, as bystanders watched a black driver flee. Police recovered weapons and funds and seek Benjamin Cooper linked to the fatal crash.

In Madras district two passenger trains driven by strikebreakers were wrecked at Kodaikanal and Tuticorin amid ongoing railroad employee strikes. Casualties were reported from both accidents.

The body of an unidentified man about 50 was found in a ditch one mile south of Warwick Ohio. He had a gunshot wound to the head and eighty feet of rope around his neck. His clothing suggested attempts to obscure identification.
Charles Belt seven year old of Carrsville ate a ten pound supper at a Lexington restaurant. The meal included salmon pork bealts onions a jelly roll candy oranges crackers three bottles of pop and water. He suffered no ill effects.

In Chicago on July 23 a collision between two crowded Illinois Central trains left about a dozen passengers seriously hurt and transported to hospitals while around twenty more were shaken up. The electrically operated trains collided as one was discharging passengers and the other slowed to stop, crowding riders between cars. Railroad officials had not yet assigned blame.
