Six men were indicted by the Hamilton County Grand Jury for grand larceny in the theft of 2500 dollars worth of tires from A Bernstein at Ninth and Race streets. Indictees include William Weyming Louis Levine Harry McMillan Charles Williams Edward Clayton and Jesse Hoots with testimony leading to the cases. Additional indictments included Robert Bowman and many others for assorted crimes ranging from forgery burglary and grand larceny to sodomy and horse stealing.
The city has rested its case in its bid to invalidate street car referendum petitions opposing the ordinance cutting a car fare. Hearing lasted six weeks before former Chief Justice Nichols with over 1,200 witnesses. Judge Nichols will report findings to the Ohio Supreme Court. arguments set for Tuesday. Assistant City Solicitor Dennis J. Ryan represents the city.
Judge Joseph B. Kelley postponed the dissolution order for the Herancourt Company to Saturday after receivership matters for the brewery are settled. Receivership assets will be sold by Herman A. Hohnhorst, the reappointed receiver. Testimony revealed 1,800 barrels of "good" beer valued at 90,000 dollars, likely to be poured into Mill Creek, as defined by containing more than half of 1 percent alcohol.
Blanche Ivy, clothing repair shop owner at 766 West Fifth, files for divorce from Thomas Ivy. She fled in May after cruel treatment and razor threats. He allegedly tried to kill her, forced entry at her aunt’s home, and later threatened her at her business. Attorney Thomas B. Richmond represents her.
Leona C. Hoyt of Hartwell sues Georeg R. Hoyt for divorce after a year apart. She cites his departure for Kentucky oil fields and unreturned letters, and seeks custody of their two children. The couple married June 2, 1916, and are represented by Littleford and Ballard.
Mrs Lorine Hennegan sues Paul M Hennegan foreman of Hennegan Co printers for divorce alimony and child custody alleging he urged her to divorce to marry another woman after their 1908 New York marriage. She says quarrels harmed her health and forced her to her mother's home for two years.
Dr Oscar M Craven chief medical officer of the Health Department releases health tips for students. Avoid peers with sore throats do not share gum candy or fruit keep pencils from mouths and wash hands. Eat sparingly of candy and walk to school start early and play outside in parks and playgrounds.
The petitioner claims the respondent, who earns 45 dollars weekly, paid 15 dollars weekly for their support and their child but abused her during these payments, describing it as blackmail. The suit is filed by Attorneys Galvin and Bauer.
Mrs Emma Hughes seeks to cancel a deed of 68 East Auburn Avenue in Common Pleas Court. She claims Lord Holloway promised $10,500 for the property and later failed to pay. Attorney is C S Burdsall.
Yesterday Judge C. W. Hoffman granted divorces in four cases. Ruth Liebert seeks separation from Alfert Liebert on extreme cruelty. Loretta Dignan files from Philip Dignan on gross neglect. Jessie Smith seeks from William R. Smith citing wilful absence. Daniel Petri seeks from Virginia Petri on infidelity.
Passport application was entered yesterday for Mrs Ruth Emerson Hannaford of Belmont and Larch avenues College Hill to join her husband and work with his missionary activity in Japan.
Creditors of Isaac Sevilla at 1119 Main street elected Dawson Bradley as Trustee to close the business. His bond was set at 4000 dollars. A sale is scheduled for October 7. Samuel Buchwald's sale is set for October 3 with distribution to creditors on October 10. A 5 percent dividend was declared in the bankruptcy of Wallace Paul Lam, confectioner.
A batch of cases filed includes Emma Hughes vs Lord Holloway to set aside a conveyance. John Farnum Co. v The Ohio Top Co. for $1,000 on account. Several divorce and alimony actions: Leona Hoyt v George Hoyt, Blanche Ivy v Thomas Ivy, Anna Anderson v Fred Anderson, Lorine Hennegan v Paul Hennegan, Ira Welker v William Walker, Charles W Miller v Margaret Miller. Also reform of contract in Walter Motley case and one suit for $10 by August Glautenbach vs Sherman Albers.
A telegram from Governor Davis announced Harvey E. Antrim of the Leamington Building Norwood as Superintendent of the City State Employment Bureau in City Hall. He succeeds Joseph Clark who resigned to enter advertising. Antrim's resume includes work as employment manager for industrial firms and government and leadership at Bullock Company before its Allis Chalmers acquisition.
The wedding of Clara B Heyker and Charles F Steinmetz will be at St Catherine's Church at 8 30 this morning. Rev Joseph A Thicken will officiate with Miss Martha Steinmetz and Miss Rosella Haucke as attendants and Charles Felix and William Blank as groomsmen. After a South trip, they will reside on Gamble Avenue.
An open Bertha C Lietze Campaign Committee meeting is set on the Hotel Gibson mezzanine with a brief program after a business session. Headquarters will open 8:30 to 10:30 daily at 417 Walnut street on October 10, with committee members listed including Chairman Miss Marie C Costello and others handling publicity and ads.
General John J. Pershing arrived in Paris from Havre at 5 pm. A crowd of about 20 000 cheered as he was escorted to a hotel by Ambassador Herrick. The Paris liner was greeted by French warships and a 21 gun salute while troops and officials welcomed him, plans for tours in France underway.
A heavy army truck crashed through a bridge near Savage Maryland disrupting telephonic service to Washington for two hours. The impact toppled two large underground cables, severing lines to the Nrth and Northeast.
In Dowagiac Michigan a blood stained nail studded club and a bloody fingerprint are key clues in the murder of William Monroe his wife and their seventeen year old daughter Neva and serious injury to Ardith their ten year old daughter Ardith lay unconscious in a bed with head wounds. Neighbor Grace McKee found Ardith and the bodies after hearing Ardith moan. Police say the family was likely killed while asleep no robbery motive yet suspected two Kalamazoo hospital inmates are being sought as possible connections.
The Rev Fausto P Pisani former Italian Mission pastor married Miss Inez Monfort at Cincinnati. only witnesses were the bride's mother and sister. The couple planned to move to Monessen Pennsylvania where Pisani had preached. Miss Monfort taught music at Marysville College and Clarksville Arkansas and sang in the Sixth Presbyterian Church choir.
Washington reports a 3500 percent drop in mail robberies in five months after arming postal workers and offering a 5000 dollar reward for dead or alive bandits. The Ft Worth train ambush led to two bandits shot dead. Alvin S. Page of the railway mail service received a Washington summons and a reward for his role.
Miss Louise Austin daughter of Rev A B Austin of 2311 Burnet avenue and Miss Anna W Lloyd daughter of Samuel W Lloyd of Terrace Park return to Mt Holyoke College South Hadley Massachusetts as the campus opens with about eight hundred students. Austin serves as a secretary of the Students League while Lloyd sits on the Class Executive Committee.
The General Protestant Orphan Asylum board awarded an automobile donated at the Orphans' Festival to Edward Dotzauer of 273 West McMicken Avenue. A kitchen outfit including a range refrigerator and cabinet was given to Mrs. R. Hufler of 3146 Bishop Street.
