Special Dispatch reports Philadelphia Kensington mill district faces a tariff driven crisis as August winds down. prominent manufacturers warn after September 1 orders dry up and mills risk closing, with fears of workers and imports flooding the market. John R. Snowden notes current work tied to backlogged orders from a prior strike.
Fire at Ossining New York Sing Sing Prison destroys three shops including the mat shop and cart and wagon plant. Convict firefighters help subdue flames as guards and village firefighters join the effort. prisoners praise warden and prevent spread toward the foundry. No injuries reported.
In Jackson Mississippi on July 22 a fire on the second floor of the Oakley convict farm cage trapped thirty five Black prisoners to death. The wooden structure lacked firefighting gear and had no stair access as flames and bars prevented escape. The building, ten years old and built from discarded penitentiary lumber, housed inmates from the cotton fields with the State farm hospital nearby. Fire origin undetermined. first floor filled with flammable material.
Ruth Fairchild, a newlywed residing at 234 Seymour Street, faced three weeks of anonymous letters attacking her character. The missives, sent around her Germantown district, were traced by post office investigators who suspect three people, including a local woman, as interviews with her mother approach.
