Woman Fatally Hurt in Runaway in Lexington

Mrs. Martin Dowdy of Carter County died after a forked stick pierced her hip during a runaway horse incident in Lexington. Her husband assisted by cutting the stick with a pocket knife before extraction as the horse bolted and she tried to jump free.

Survivors reach Eureka after Columbia disaster sinks off Mendocino

Eureka reports 157 of 249 aboard the Columbia escaped when the steamer sank near Shelter Cove between midnight and 1 am. The George W. Elder towed the San Pedro to Eureka with 107 passengers and 37 crew. A relief effort by citizens, led by Mayor Ricks, organized clothing and medical aid.
