A violent clash at Vesta Coal Company near California Pennsylvania escalated into a riot after Charles Secora killed Constable Bert Hyatt. Deputies and mine officials are barricaded in the shaft as 500 to 700 workers, mostly foreigners, confront approaching reinforcements.
The Tuundin, a thirty six foot non sinkable lifeboat with wireless, will attempt the Atlantic crossing from New York to Europe. Captain A P Lundin of Welin Marine Equipment Company oversees the trial voyage with a crew of four men and one woman, Mrs Finar Siward, to prove the craft can weather any sea. Provisions for a month, extra rations, and fuel are aboard, with the Lundin lifeboat towed as a reserve.
