A deadly explosion on a U S gunboat leaves numerous casualties with Ohio residents among the victims. Officials report one dead, twelve missing, and sixty injured as emergency crews respond and investigate the incident.
The body of fourteen year old Olive Johnson of Lima Ohio was recovered from a burning car after it plunged into a ditch on the river road near Broad Ripple Indiana. Driver Cr Dale and five others suffered severe burns or bruises as gasoline ignited and exploded.
A late report from Salonica says a large Bulgarian force attacked Baljti na and Gradeshnitza in the Marinevo district killing the entire population. The massacre lasted into the morning and total victims are not yet known. Troops burned a fleeing village where residents were suspected of murdering thirty Turks near Doiran.
Lewis Spain, legally with two wives, faced a tangle after divorces and a July 14 marriage to Cora Stanley Allman. A judge voided Spain’s first divorce, then a license clerk issued a license before notification reached. The case hinges on whether the decree is restored, potentially forcing another wedding reenactment.
Richmond Indiana July 21 relatives and friends of Frank McNutt of this city shocked by reports that after six years as Chamberlain to Pope Leo he has been imprisoned by Vatican orders. Details suppressed and Richmond relatives plan to learn the circumstances and aid him. McNutt is independently wealthy and married to a former New Yorker, Miss Ogden. He rose in diplomatic service to Constantinople and Madrid and held the Pope Leo chamberlain post before again serving under Pope Pius X.
Chicago July 21 Striking Teamsters who quit the walkout rushed back to work as employers began reinstating workers. Many who returned were placed immediately, while coal teamsters and truck drivers did not rejoin. Police protection remains, and employers move to an open shop in a coordinated effort across affected industries.
John Strait of Herbrun near Cameron attacked his daughter Jessie at Samuel Griffiths home. He struck with a stone, fired five shots, and axed her after she refused to blame another. Jessie was hospitalized in Wheeling. Strait was arrested near Morford Pennsylvania and held without bail at Waynesburg Jail.
In Youngstown D July 21 David O Hara 24 died after pushing Michael Stenkovitch from a fast train near Lowellville on Pittsburg and Lake Erie tracks. O Hara sprang onto the rails to save him but was struck by the cowcatcher and mangled.
The Ford & Johnson Company, formed from chair makers across several states, leases a ten year term at 6000 per year for one third of the Kruse Bahlman Hardware Building in East Sixth Street Cincinnati. The same brokers lease the building's fifth floor to Sherwin Williams of Cleveland with ground floor offices. The move marks the companys long effort to enter the Cincinnati trade.
Ernest Herold died Thursday in Hamilton Ohio. He drew a will directing his body be buried in Greenwood Cemetery with custody given to his father. His wife Sarah contested probate claiming the will affects burial rights. Judge Jones ruled the body not property, halting the will’s effect. An injunction to prevent burial was filed in Common Pleas. Judge Belden postponed ruling until Saturday.
Mrs Emeline Bender aged 70 and Rev Charles W Miller aged 71 renewed a schoolmate friendship after a year and married at the bride’s son Rev G L Bender’s home in this city. They will move to Williamstown Pa where Miller pastors United Brethren Church. The bride, widow of Rev George Bender, seeks active life as a minister’s wife.
Georgetown Indiana, twelve miles west of New Albany, was nearly washed away by a cloudburst. Main street water reached three feet, Little Indian Creek swelled over banks and damaged stores while surrounding areas suffered floods. In Evansville, the heaviest Indiana rain in months caused washouts and rising rivers with mile long tracks washed away and crops damaged.
U S ship Bennington lies beached in San Diego Harbor after a blast at 10:30 pm. Thirty-nine known dead and many injured. crew lists include N K Perry and J Barchus among the dead, with twenty-two seriously hurt and fifty-five more lightly hurt. Admiral Goodrich heads Pacific Fleet inquiry. shore crews mobilize aid. The vessel was bound for Port Harford when the accident occurred near Commercial Wharf.
Official reports from Constantinople say a bomb exploded in the mosque courtyard during the Selamlik ceremony. The Sultan was unharmed but several of his suite were killed or wounded. Several arrests have been made as censorship suppresses further news.
In Buffalo on July 21 the three independent linseed mills outside the Linseed Trust shut down as the American Linseed Company backed by John D. Rockefeller gained control of all flaxseed. Prices rose, pushing independent mills out of profit and forcing shutdowns.
The prevailing rate climbs to 1.48 a bushel from 1.24 and as low as 1.10 due to crop failures in India and a shortage in Argentina. Rockefeller interests are expected to maintain control until the new crop is harvested around September or October. Only the American Linseed Company mill operates. Kellogg, Mann Bros., and Hapenstein mills are closed.
