After a month long inquiry detectives, private investigators, and Maryland Casualty Company agents fail to explain the loss of Mrs. Walter Balke jewels hidden behind a chiffonier in her Grandin Road home. The theft occurred on June 23 with valuables missing a week later. Casulty investigators withdrew after two weeks with no results. Mrs Balke has since returned home and renewed searches continue.

Attack on strike breakers injures many in San Francisco
In San Francisco on July 20 a car wreck occurred after gunmen attacked a United Railroads crew at Twenty ninth and Noe streets. Conductor Tallskong and Motorman Feller were wounded, the wrecked car crashed into a store injuring Sophie Bernstein and others as police used clubs and made numerous arrests.

Campbell County Deputy Sheriff Harry Egbert died after a beer bottle strike at Coney Island. He and Deputy Charles Davis were with friends when a group insulted Egbert and one man hit him on the head. He collapsed, was carried to a clubhouse, then to City Hospital where he died. He was 88, longtime Newport resident, married, of 313 Center street Bellevue, nephew of the late Col Harry C Egbert. Coroner Cameron was notified.

Deadly Pere Marquette excursion crash at Washburn Crossing
Salem Michigan July 20 A Pere Marquette excursion train carrying nearly 1 000 employees and families collided with a local freight at Washburn Crossing two miles east of Salem. Thirty one people were killed and about 100 injured many fatally. The wreck left the smoking car and first coaches crushed and several other cars derailed. Hospitalized victims included numerous Ionia residents with broken bones head injuries and lacerations. Several unnamed bodies were reported among the dead.
