President elect Dewey plans an official visit to Trieste to attend a reception in preparation for a proposed trip to the United States. The event signals strong international interest as United States officials coordinate travel and security measures.
Admiral Dewey arrived at Trieste aboard the Olympia and received a hero's welcome with Austrian guns saluting. He discussed peace prospects with Aguinaldo, praised McKinley, and joked about unread correspondence after a servant overwhelmed by letters.
Admiral Dewey’s flagship Olympia arrived in Trieste after a monsoon plagued voyage from Port Said. Dewey intends two weeks in port with health good and possible Vienna visit while shipboard stays preferred. Weather cool on shore despite 86 degree thermometer. Carlsbad trip unlikely.

In Vienna July 20 Admiral Dewey told Neue Freie Presse that the Hague Peace Conference will not disarm the world. He cited the U S armament buildup, noting the danger of being unprepared again and predicting other powers will keep or expand their warships despite the talks.
London dispatch reports Admiral Dewey will not sail home on the Olympia. The ship stays in the Adriatic for crew health before Dewey travels overland to Liverpool or Southampton to take a liner home. No other sources confirm the account.
London July 21 The Daily Mail correspondent reports Admiral Dewey told him he felt nervous and seasick from bad coffee prior to the Manila engagement, reducing his claim to hero status.
Special dispatch reports Louis Billow of Fremont Ohio was arrested in Ellensburg Washington on July 2 awaiting transfer by local officers. He blew up Jacob Hess’s Lindsey home with dynamite and shot Hess dead on May 16 1896.
Advices from Berlin report the town of Dobeshi in Volhynia government, Russia, was wiped out by a blaze. Seven people died and the remaining residents were left destitute.
Reports from Hamburg state the Emperor visited passengers on the Au gusta Victoria at Aalssund and later received a party aboard the Hohenzollern. A New York merchant led the group and the Emperor had a long talk with him. Both sides expressed mutual goodwill.
In Huntington West Virginia a dispute over the size of a man s feet led to a duel style shooting. Will Brinscoe allegedly wears oversized shoes and was killed by Homer Strauss who was wounded in the leg. Strauss fled toward Kentucky as Brinscoe died an hour after being shot. Both men were popular locally.
In Port Huron Michigan the men and women of the Knights of the Maccabees adjourned after the annual parade. The Supreme Tent debated proposed laws including an amendment to the disability clause to align with old ideas. The order currently pays seniors at 70 regardless of disability. the new amendment requires disability. The ladies approved an extra assessment to bolster the emergency fund.
President McKinley accepts Russell A. Alger's resignation as Secretary of War effective August 1. Readiness to clean house noted, with Meiklejohn handling department duties pending transition. Contenders for successor include Griggs, Porter, Wilson, Greene, and possible Elihu Root move. Miles may gain broader command in the Philippines.

In Columbus in July a pardon for William M. Coup, serving a five year term from Preble County for horse stealing, was secured by forged letters from Judge Fisher and Prosecutor Vaughn claiming mistaken identity.
A three story Mang Block in Main street Circleville collapsed at 3 pm. Beck's meat market and Grace saloon occupied lower floor with fourteen inside. Fred Wink buried and dies later, Shelby Stage severely injured. Cause blamed on undermined foundation from water drainage. Miraculous escape for others as debris filled the cellar.
Postoffice Department officials plan to request an appropriation from Congress to use automobiles for collecting mails at all first class offices. The proposal aims to replace horse hire allowances totaling 410000 dollars, following successful tests in Buffalo.
Ernest B. Anderson of Owensboro Ky married Edith Mae Smith this afternoon in Ludlow Massachusetts. Smith was formerly teacher of oratory at Owensboro Female College. Anderson was known as Hobson’s Annapolis roommate.
New York July 2 Mrs O H P Belmont donates 3000 dollars to the Nassau Hospital fund at Mineola Long Island A similar gift comes from Mrs P J Harper supporting the Mineola hospital project.
In Indianapolis on July 20 Epworth League delegates poured in, about 15 000 attendees with a strong female majority. Volunteers in white pique caps greeted them at Union Station and led them to lodging while two sessions opened at 2 30 p m in the Epworth tent and Tomlinson Hall with Hugh Dougherty presiding and welcome addresses given.
In London electric cabs failed to catch on. The electric cab company decided to give up the struggle and called all its vehicles in. The superintendent blamed inability to recruit the right sort of drivers.
At The Hague peace conference the US and Great Britain voted together to oppose prohibiting asphyxiating gases and explosive bullets. Captain Mahan and Sir Julian Paunceote urged withdrawing the clause and proposed a convention on three points of the Muraville circular. The amended report will be considered tomorrow as the conference weighs a full convention on the disputed points and a new Geneva convention for naval warfare.
Colonel Culver finished placing four bronze statues on the Illinois monument at Missionary Ridge. Tomorrow markers will mark Illinois regiments near Cravens House Lookout Mountain and near Brage’s Tower on Missionary Ridge. Culver has a $65,000 contract for monuments and markers and will begin Shiloh work within sixty days.
Pittsburg July 2 Admiral Dewey declined to stop at Constantinople despite urgent invitation from Oscar Straus United States Minister to Turkey. The act is seen as a snub to Sultan Abdul Hamid II who decorated him with the Hasan Medjidie first class. The honor required a personal call to the Sultan and Dewey did not appear.

The body of Louis Hanel, inmate at Dayton Soldiers' Home, was found in a wooded area six miles southeast of Indianapolis. The pocket had been rifled, suggesting murder. He had been visiting Herman Leichhoff's farm when found.
Griggs, attorney general, was enjoying a strong golf run in Winsted Conn when he received a sudden summons to Washington. He had beaten local players and left for the capital with regret saying he might return before the week ends.
In Ashtabula Ohio on July 20 hoisting engineers and gang bosses walked out at M. A. Hanna docks. Twenty men quit over the discharge of an engineer for a trivial reason. Other dock workers may join the strike and a meeting is under way with L. C. Hanna of Cleveland, dock manager. An early settlement is expected.
Salt Lake City July 20 Judge Morill fined Angus M Cannon $100 after he pleaded guilty by attorney to unlawful cohabitation. Cannon was not present in court.
