A local flare of anger erupts as dynamite outrage shocks residents and raises questions about the church’s foe. Tensions mount over who bears the venom behind the incident, stirring community debate and calls for answers.
Special dispatch reports a string of dynamite incidents in Portsmouth dating to last month. A suspect, William Lloyd, was arrested after last night’s blast at Second Presbyterian Church, with threats of lynching amid community anger. Explosives tied to stolen magazine material from Richardson, Hendorfer, and Silecox are suspected.
Marion Ohio July 19 Large crowds gathered at Camp Whitaker with excursion trains into the city. Devotional services were led by Rev George J Browne and Rev C L Winger. The Chevaliers and Cantons marched in full dress, with regalia from the Daughters of Rebekah and other branches. A sacred concert by the Metropolitan Band followed by dress parade and prize drills. Delaware Canton and other Cantons reported attendance. Browne and Winger spoke on the platform.
St Louis July 19. The middle-of-the-road Populists drafted a platform by Alfred Daggett California and plan to nominate a straight-out Populist for president. They demand a government currency issued without banks, unlimited gold and silver coinage at 16 to 1, repeal of national banks, and laws to force debt payments in gold or silver. They call for postal savings banks, government loans to citizens and municipal corporations, a nonpartisan tariff commission, and measures to curb trusts while expanding government credit and circulation.
The body of Mrs. Henry Insko, drowned last Sunday in the Big McCracken Creek flood, was found today by Albert Hurn in a drift pile three miles downstream from the place where she disappeared.
Special Dispatch to Commercial Tribune from Hopkinsville Kentucky reports that the wife of Philip T Teague who lives near White Plains north of the city delivered triplets yesterday all three daughters in good health weighing six seven and eight pounds respectively.
At High Bridge Kentucky a fight erupted during the annual camp meeting drawing 5 000 to 6 000 attendees. Ed and Milton Cook and J T Stevens fought near the bridge. Stevens was wounded thrice in the neck face and chest and is in critical condition. The Cook brothers were arrested and jailed pending trial.
Two McCormick circus canvas men, Thomas Fox of Parkersburg and John Goldburg of Huntington, clashed in Portsmouth Ohio. Fox's head was fatally split by a tent stake. Goldburg was captured and jailed awaiting Fox’s outcome.
A lightning bolt hit a tree at North and Delaware streets and tore it apart. A large fragment flew across the street and shattered a chandelier in Mrs. W. F. Brown's drawing room. Rabbi Messing's wife fainted in the doorway but suffered no injuries.
Governor McKinley spent a quiet day at his Canton home with few callers and planned a Cleveland visit to attend the Forest City Centennial opening. He was to speak on opening day and receive the season’s largest watermelon from a prize contest, to be ceremoniously presented by the B&O Railroad Agent for the South. Rev John Wesley Hill of Minneapolis preached at the governor’s church, delivering a masterful discourse to a large crowd without referencing McKinley or his candidacy.
In Galesburg Illinois, Louis S Gradke and his wife aged 64 killed themselves with morphine after business failure and saloon woes. Their daughter Jennie found them at 8 am. they died two hours later. They left three children. Mrs Gradke had written a forgiveness letter and spoke of a $5000 life policy.
Mrs Molly Johns sued Mrs Elizabeth M Johnston for 10000 damages claiming defamation after Johnston accused her of setting a house fire. Johnston answered denying uttering the words quoted or any slanderous remarks in front of others.
In Victor Fayette County, July 19, farmer J M Steele, Alex Steele and W M Syages witnessed a bear attack a hog. Scaggs, hearing the commotion, threw a rock to scare it. The bear charged Scaggs and chased James Steele, who fired but did not stop it. The trio fled to safety, locking the bear out of Scage's house. Alex Steele returned with a gun and fired at the bear.
St Xavier’s Church reopened to a large crowd in Parkersburg West Virginia with retouched Italian paintings and a grand hand carved altar. The morning Pontifical Mass was celebrated by Rt Rev Bishop Donohue with Fr D O Connor as assistant and Fr Hagan as deacon. Music featured a full choir and violinist Janicki. Bishop Donohue preached at the evening service.
Lawrenceburg Ky July 19 The couple who lay on the track near here were not man and wife but Joseph Hopper and his niece Lottie Johnson of London Ky They left London together a week ago The motive for their act remains a deep mystery as two trains cut them to pieces in a public tragedy
Edward Cole a 23 year old snare drummer for the McKinley and Hobart Club stepped onto a fast B O train track with his girlfriend Mary Hardin 18 at Washington C H July 19. He announced I want to see how game I am as the train approached and was cut to pieces. The engineer halted but could not stop in time and Coles body was found with legs and arm severed and head scalp. The girlfriend fled in fright. Cole and his wife had separated recently.
New York July 19 bulletin from Cornelius Vanderbilt residence reports his father Mr. Vanderbilt has a comfortable night and stable condition. Harry Payne Whitney visits the mansion and notes cooler weather aids recovery. Cornelius Vanderbilt leaves the mansion and says his father ate a little nourishment and shows hope, while he himself remains in the city for now.
The body of William McDaniel known as Fiddling Bill was discovered near Knottsville on Friday after being missing for over a month. His violin, essential to his travels, was found wrapped in cloth nearby, and authorities note he was a harmless eccentric with no known relatives.
Kokomo Indiana July 19 The plan to celebrate the tenth anniversary of the discovery of natural gas in Indiana faces a setback The proposed gas belt exposition set for September 6 to mark the Eaton Delaware County strike is canceled after officials reveal Portland Jay County struck gas earlier in March 1886 making Eaton not the first open gas well The discovery chronology is revised by State Gas Inspector Leach and Indiana Natural Gas Company head Elwood Haynes causing the abandonment of the expo plans.
In Benton Baptist Church yard seven miles from Harrodsburg Kentucky, farmer William Beard was shot by James Wesley Bugg after Bugg accused Beard’s wife of infidelity. Beard died near the church door, his wife present. Bugg captured and jailed amid threats of lynching. Beard leaves a wife and six children. burial held this afternoon.
The examining trial of Loney Ewing, charged with shooting Johhnie Lovelace near White Plains Hopkins County, ended in Madisonville with a verdict of acquittal. Evidence supported self-defense. Ewing, freed, was immediately re-arrested and taken to McLean County to answer a new shooting charge.
Cleveland marks the citys centennial with Protestant Catholic and Jewish addresses. A mass meeting at Central Armory precedes military encampment dedications by Gov Bushnell. Founders Day July 22 honors Moses Cleaveland with visits by Gov Coffin Senator Hawley and Major McKinley.
City authorities will close franchise contracts with Central Union and Phenix Telephone Companies. The winning company pays 6000 dollars yearly to the City Treasury, underground wires in the business district, and a special duct for police and fire alarm lines and other city wires. Connections must be free. regulations are stringent to protect city interests.
The Agricultural Department reports generally poor fruit crop conditions nationwide. Apples fell from 71 to 64.6 in June, while peaches show midrange prospects with a 51.8 general average after a 12.9 point drop. Nevada and mountain states fare better, but the Atlantic coast remains weakest. Delaware Maryland Ohio Michigan Illinois Indiana Kentucky Missouri Kansas futures vary. New Jersey Connecticut New York Pennsylvania face poor to fair yields.
In Indianapolis on July 19 two boys Edward Doyle seventeen and Robert Meadows seven drowned in the White River near the Meridian street bridge after driving a horse and wagon into deep water. The horse became unmanageable and both youths were thrown out.
The will dated 1885 probated in Hartford disposes of much of Harriet Beecher Stowe estate. Charles E Stowe receives the silver inkstand cabinet of signatures. Harriet and Eliza receive the silver waiter and silver basket. Georgiana will receive the late Duchess of Sutherland gift bracelet. One third of remaining property goes to Rev Charles E Stowe. Major John C Parson trustees the rest with income to daughters Harriet and Eliza. Inventory totals 42353.98 with $8750 due from Houghton Mifflin for copyrights.

Marietta Ohio July 19 A West Virginia man Henry Wilson tells of a catfish raised out of water by a Squire Spencer to prove a theory that any creature can live out of its element. The fish lived on air then followed Spencer to a shallow creek where it fell and drowned. Wilson says he can prove the tale, marking a claimed first fish drowning.
Governor and Mrs. Bushnell attended the dedication of the chapel at the Boys Industrial School in Lancaster. A military reception by cadets and the school band preceded inspections, dedication ceremonies, and remarks by Governor Bushnell and trustees. The stone chapel seats 1200 and cost 23000. The governor reviewed a dress parade of about eight hundred before departing for Columbus.
Walter B. Richie, brother-in-law of Senator Brice, returns to Lima after brief visit to Normandie-by-the-Sea. He is said to be working for James B. Campbell’s senate bid two years ahead, as Ohio lines up for fall efforts. Also rumored is Tom L. Johnson seeking Brice’s seat. Italian Consul Ravogii and wife stay in Cincinnati. Kilgore and Hays attend city hotels.
Frank Hart, owner of The Jug saloon in Tyler County, was arrested in Middlesbourne for selling liquor without a license. In jail, he faced $600 bond. upon hearing, crowds returned to the saloon, drank remaining liquor, and looted the premises as chaos erupted.
St Louis date July 19 report claims Bryan will not agree to split electoral votes. Matt Ward, Bryan's envoy, asserts all electors must be Democrats named by state Democratic organizations. Populists split looms as Lewelling supports indorsement with a division. otherwise the Populist party risks collapse.
ST LOUIS July 19 George F Washburn of Boston Populist chairman visited Bryan in Lincoln. He declined to reveal interview details but favored indorsing Bryan and uniting silver forces. He warned a split would give defeat and urged fusion with Bryan Sewall or risk losing silver Republicans and a weakened election.
