A riot erupts at the state prison with 1,135 inmates involved as unrest from eastern penitentiary factions leads to violent clashes and chaotic demands in the dining room.
Prisoners at the Western Penitentiary in Pittsburgh sparked a large riot, firing buildings, clashing with guards, and drawing in deputy sheriffs police and armed citizens. Six convicts were shot, two others wounded, with losses over $50,000. Parole officer John M. Egan blamed long term inmates for the unrest amid new arrivals from Philadelphia.
Washington reports the Shipping Board ran a deficit of about 380 million dollars in the last fiscal year. Chairman Lasker says total government outlay for merchant marine operations reached 680 million, with only 3,000 of 9,000 voyages accounted for and 200 auditors assigned to trace missing records. He asks Congress for 300 million to cover the coming year and outlines efforts to settle claims.
In Columbus on July 18 Governor Davis reorganizes state departments focusing on removing Democrats. Seven women stenographers, all Democratic appointees, announce plans to switch from typing to domestic work as part of the reshuffle.

Lindsay was walking home along McMillan Street when the faint-hearted pair produced revolvers and demanded money. He countered with a boast and reached for an empty hip pocket, causing the pair to flee.
Corunna Michigan July 18 Higgins was acquitted of murder of his fiancée Lucy Wittum by a circuit court jury after a two hour deliberation. The jury rejected first degree murder and followed instructions that the verdict reflect a killing rather than abandonment amid testimony of a so called death pact. State prosecutor Byron Hicks argued discrepancies in Higgins testimony.
A powerful bomb exploded in front of the Buenos Aires capitol this morning wounding a policeman seriously. Authorities report only material damage and blame communist agitators for the attack.
In Cincinnati yesterday morning Judge Charles W. Hoffman left his car in the courthouse yard. By 4 PM the judge searched the parking area to no avail, finding only a whisk broom from a side pocket as the sole clue.
Bombing planes destroyed the German light cruiser Frankfurt sixty miles east of Virginia Capes after an all day attack. A 600 pound bomb near the bow exploded in the water, causing the ship to sink. Seventy eight bombs in total from navy and army aircraft were launched from Hampton Roads and Langley Field, ending with the cruiser going down amid cheering ships. Brigadier General Mitchell witnessed the sinking from a pursuit plane.
Governor Stephens commuted the death sentence of William Henry Norris alias Arthur Owen Davis, a Terre Haute youth, to life imprisonment because he was not 18 at the time of the murder for which he was convicted.
Mrs Eva Catherine Kaber, jailed for the murder of her husband Daniel F Kaber, said her arrest prevented a planned marriage to a wealthy New Yorker. Attorney Sam H Kest reported she had arrangements for a wedding and a European honeymoon before the arrest.
Five automobile bandits robbed the Orangeville Bank, forcing the president to enter their car. They drove five miles from Orangeville and threw him from the vehicle after escaping with $7000. Local police pursue leads in Warren Ohio.
London July 18 Sir James Craig declares that De Valera and Britain must settle on the area outside Ulster. He states Northern Ireland does not claim to determine terms and promises cooperation on common interests once settled, then returns to Ireland to continue government work.
Northport New York July 13 District Attorney Young refused Sheriff Kellys request to prosecute Mrs Helen Hemming in the death of her husband broker Henry G Hemming shot by caretaker Frank Eberhardt who later killed himself There is no evidence she aided the killer and she warned him away Officials renewed inquiry amid questions from Sheriff Kelly noting she was aware of the caretakers intent If new facts emerge action may follow Mrs Hemming said broker son John G Hemming barred her from the funeral and demanded sworn statements about newspaper reports before informing her of services
London July 18 Ulster Premier Sir James Craig discloses that Sinn Fein support for no partition and Northern Ireland self determination rule out a conference with Lloyd George De Valera. Officials still hope for Thursday talks as Smuts supports moderation in the negotiations with De Valera and Craig.
Fifteen year old Ralph Bostain of Hyde Park is saved from drowning after John Raymond 14 dives underwater to reach him when a vibrating springboard at Kil gour's Woods Lake signals trouble. Raymond and Gerald Smith 16 aid in surfacing the unconscious boy and getting him to a doctor. The rescue ends with Bostain recovering at home and Raymond hailed as a hero at dinner.
A Covington boy named William Sweeney aged years drowned in the Ohio near the Licking River mouth yesterday afternoon. He cried for help twice while his companions watched, then sank before rescuers could reach him. Firemen recovered the body and used a pulmotor but could not revive him.
The Detroit Toledo and Ironton Railroad owned by Henry Ford filed with the Ohio Public Utilities Commission a plan to reduce freight rates 20 percent for local shipments along its line from Irontaqa Ohio to Dearborn Michigan. The adjustment does not affect joint or connecting routes and becomes effective August 20, making it among the first voluntary rate cuts by an Ohio railroad and likely one of the early nationwide actions.
The Evening Post reports a citizen ballot in Louisville showing 2,367 votes against daylight saving time and 804 in favor from a total of 3,171 votes cast. The result indicates clear local opposition to the time change.
