Nathan Swartz, linked to the 12-year-old Julia Conners murder, was found dead by gas in a Christie Street room. A torn envelope and newspaper notes reveal his stated guilt and plea to his mother as investigators tied him to the slaying.
J B McNamara, one of the convicted dynamiters of the Los Angeles Times building, has been kept in solitary confinement at San Quentin for a week due to repeated insubordination. Warden Hoyle says the punishment is for persistent rule violations and denies any plot to burn the jute mill.
Reno July 18. Ten bodies recovered and up to ten more believed dead after a cloudburst thirty miles from Lovelock destroyed Mazuma mining camp and damaged Seven Troughs. Listed dead include John Trenchard merchant Mazuma and his wife Mrs Trenchard. Mike Qualin miner Mazuma. a Gillespie family son. four Keogh boys. Rescue teams and supplies dispatched from Lovelock. Mazuma wall of water swept through canyon, many bodies found miles from home.
Gloucester reported Dr. A. Pratt Andrew, former assistant secretary of the treasury, renewed charges against Secretary MacVeagh. He urged President Taft to release a description of treasury conditions written by a top official ten weeks before Andrew’s resignation, a document he says supports his claims.
Insolvency report filed in Cleveland shows Euclid Trust and Savings would pay depositors dollar for dollar after ten years with 6 percent interest and a remaining balance of 43,798 dollars plus two notes for 31,188 signed by Mrs Chadwick.
In New Straitsville Ohio on July 18 hundreds of men fought a blazing oil fire threatening homes and businesses. Three crude oil tanks atop a hill were struck by lightning, their flames aimed into the city center. Volunteers worked to dam the flow, channeling oil into a creek as heat and rapid effort overwhelmed many responders.
New York reports tightens in the Rosenthal murder inquiry as Rose and Becker figures emerge. Bald Jack disputes key details while Shapiro offers testimony about the gray car and police connections. Investigators press Becker after cross examination and Burns plans to meet with the district attorney to pursue leads.
A storm on July 18 near Jacobs Creek Pennsylvania killed nine people at the John Raymond farm along Barren Run. John Raymond escaped as a wall of water swept the ravine, washing away his wife Mrs John Raymond and six of their children and other relatives including Mrs Rovinsky and her son Mike Rovinsky.
Vienna July 18. The eucharistic congress slated for Sept 10 has already drawn 17000 notices from groups planning to attend. The host procession is expected to include 170000 people with 2000 Americans. Leading the procession will be Bishop Camillus Maes of Covington Ky. Ten cardinals will attend along with Westminster Paris Milan Cologne and Mainz archbishops and the Austro Hungarian episcopate. Anglo American assembly points will be at the Dominican Brotherhood building. St Stephen's Cathedral will host the celebrations with the grand procession departing Sept 15 through Vienna streets.
Washington July 18 A sensational report of a dynamite bomb aimed at President Taft proved a hoax. Sherman Allen assistant secretary to the president denied opening any infernal machine and White House officials backed his statement, labeling the tale wholly unfounded.

In Pittsburgh a sheriff of Hazlewood reports Patrolman Toole arrested Georgie Simms yesterday afternoon because she smiled at him. Magistrate Alperman searched Pennsylvania statutes but found no law against a smile. the girl was discharged after no defense was offered.
In Attica a tour ing car abducted Mildred Sloan from her adoptive father John W. Sloan. Police chased to Buffalo where Mrs Herman F. Lehman 27 claimed Mildred as her child and was charged with kidnapping. Chauffeur and Mrs Ambrose Kempf held as witnesses.
The American Bar Association announced a special committee to draft legislation for Congress to raise federal judges salaries. Members include Edward A Sumner New York Jacob M Dickinson Tennessee George R Peck Chicago Jean Hinckley Baltimore and Chapin Brown Washington. President Taft pledged support for the measure at the association meeting.
Representative Allen of Cincinnati will introduce a bill authorizing the secretary of war to send two large cannon to Cincinnati for permanent adornment of Mount Echo park. The action reflects installment of historic artillery as park fixtures in the city.
In Philadelphia today the National Association of Steel and Copper Pirate Engravers elected officers. Peter T. Hoehn of Buffalo was chosen president with R. E. Noble of New York as vice president. James J. Moller of Cincinnati was named treasurer and Theodore A. Isert of Louisville secretary.
Theodore Roosevelt in The Outlook denounces the Chicago convention’s tactics as a steam roller and condemns “men who live softly” for supporting fraudulent, brutal politics. He argues the people’s will was ignored and charges Taft’s nomination was secured by a fraudulent majority. He urges honest opposition and critiques Lorimer delegates and big-business ties to bosses.
Oyster Bay July 18 Colonel Roosevelt defers the manifesto for his Progressive campaign. The speech at the national convention opening night will present a practical contract with the people. He rejects unattainable platforms and denies Dixon plans to back out. He also ignores La Follette while noting Dixon works on Georgia third party setup.
A fourteen member board will direct Woodrow Wilsons presidential campaign with eight current national committee members and six outsiders. A finance committee of thirty five to forty from all regions will raise funds alongside state finance groups. Chairman William F McCombs and nine invitees to finalize details.
