Berlin reports a scene from Die Schonheit a Berlin group promoting purity while members wore a narrow girdle during a public display. Critics claim the act blurs lines with propriety and the society was forbidden to perform public demonstrations though membership remains open.
Washington reports that the United States plans a May hearing before the Hague tribunal to determine the status of American fishermen in Newfoundland waters. Chandler P. Anderson leads the effort asserting the case will be submitted by Oct. 4 under Great Britain time limits. American fishermen have long complained of unfriendly Newfoundland policies under the 1832 treaty, and a final settlement is viewed as vital to US relations with North American possessions.
A national daylight saving proposal faces trouble as the U S Department of Commerce signals little support for legislation. The Washington Chamber of Commerce was asked to endorse the plan, but officials quickly indicated there is no enthusiasm for shifting summer time.
Special Dispatch reports a grim sequence in Columbus where Italian immigrant Donato Miraballi shot and killed Francisco Cicco after claiming blackmailers from Brooklyn forced him to flee. Three others were wounded in separate shootings, including a bartender and a jealous lover, with police still searching for escaping assailants.
Constantinople July 18 The court martial report on the Adana massacres denounces local authorities as incapable and apathetic. It lists fifteen already hanged, 800 deserve death, 1,500 deserve life hard labor, and minor sentences for others. The report warns of town mobilization if punishment proceeds. It also recommends amnesty as a national fete to bridge factions.
Rome July 18 Don Carlos of Bourbon the pretender to the Spanish throne died today at Varese Lombardy after a long illness attributed to apoplexy He was born in Laybach Austria March 30 1848 and led Carlist movements in 1848 1860 and later.
Xenia Ohio July 18 The board of trustees of the Ohio Soldiers and Sailors Orphans home accepts Cleveland Engineering plans for an antiseptic filtration plant to cost about 15000 and will advertise for bids Superintendent Sawyer reappoints matrons Cassie Preston Gerd Leach Sallie Pierce and discharges several boys at dismissal age.
New York July 18 Ten persons drowned when the excursion sloop Roxanna capsized in lower New York bay carrying twenty two passengers. The captain Samuelson and twelve survivors were rescued by the tug Lamont after a rough sea and gusty wind. The list of dead includes Selina Sameason Ella Olsen and Selma Knudson among others from New York Flatbush and Brooklyn.
At Butler, a detachment of state constabulary arrived to guard the Southern Steel Car plant as striking workers clashed with mounted troops. A striker was fatally shot, two crowd members wounded, and over ten injured as 15 leaders were arrested. Meanwhile 500 Standard Wheel employees joined 2,500 striking Aga Car workers, signaling a tense, unorganized strike over pay and production.
Pittsburg July 18. Quiet returned to the Presser Steel Car works area after days of tension. Strikers wives and children filled streets and gates stood guard though troopers and deputies eased, as a civic taxpayer suit seeks court action to stop trespass and destruction while arbitration looms. A Tuesday hearing is expected.
Alban Goshérn Snyder is to assume the post as United States consul general to Panama this week, succeeding Arndt Shanklin. Born November 5, 1877 in Chapleston, he earned a BA from Washington and Lee in 1898 and studied law at West Virginia. He previously served as American vice consul to Mexico and held posts in Bogota and Buenos Aires.
A grand master from Philadelphia presided as a two day session opened in the midst of a regional gathering. Participants from multiple states attended to discuss the organization and its activities.
Manila dispatch reports Jikiri the Moro chief swore to kill a hundred men before death. He nearly kept the oath, slaying nearly that many in the Jolo fight on July six. One cave survivor escaped with safe conduct from Americans. Lieutenant Joséph A. Baer of the Sixth cavalry led the rescue and killed Jikiri, drawing praise for his marksmanship.
Cleveland officials say James J. Purvis the Centurion engineer acted in self defense when he shot and killed sailors Richard Brown and William Woods during a Saturday melee. Cincinnati traveling salesman Moses Aaron, 22, was among the injured after passenger train No. 8 derailed south of Manchester Indiana on the Monon line. Two trainmen were killed engineer N Byrne and fireman L Austin. Other injured include Mrs Margaret Bush and several Chicago residents. Seven cars left the track. the engine and baggage car overturned.
A Sunday river excursion ended when an eighteen foot Racine launch capsized near Coal Haven Kentucky opposite Cincinnati. Nine men traveled aboard. four saved, five last seen in darkness as ice and current hinder rescue efforts. Names include Albert Pettus William Fleming Otto Hoffmann Hanson Ryan John Maringer and others from Ludlow Second streets. Local neighbors and families await word as authorities organize searches.
