The Examiner reports Archduke Leopold of Austria and Laszlo Szechenyi Hungary face a duel after a telegraph quarrel. Archduke, traveling in the United States with secretary Alfred Neuhardt, sought loans to return home but was rebuffed by the Hungarian ambassador. The secretary says a resentful telegram used the term Takless meaning affront.
American Consul in Vera Cruz was shot and seriously wounded by a masked intruder in his home. Awakened by a noise, he confronted the intruder who fled after firing. A physician called the injury serious, and the event caused a sensation.
A New York World News Service dispatch from Rapid City, South Dakota, reports Governor William J. Bulow of South Dakota emerges as a potential running mate for Al Smith. Bulow, a farmer and lawyer, is respected for his dry record and strong personality, and his rising profile could boost Smith’s presidential chances.
In Dublin on July 17 the funeral of Countess Markievicz was postponed after Free State soldiers and detectives occupied the Republican plot at Glasnevin Cemetery to block the graveside volley. Lightning related fatalities total five with four in New York and one in Connecticut. Max temperature in Greater New York reached 82 with 70 percent humidity.
The ghost of John Singer Sargent is said to haunt his Chelsea studio where he died. Alfred Orr and his wife report hearing footsteps and sensing Sargent's presence, with Orr recounting a door knob turning during a night in bed. The Tate Street studio remains a coveted prize in Chelsea.
In Duquoin Illinois July 17 the Right Reverend Henry Althoff Bishop of Belleville issued an ultimatum barring women in sleeveless or low neck dresses and those using lipsticks or facial cosmetics from approaching the communion rail during services. The ban was announced after his sermon at the diocesan priests retreat in St Louis. The Belleville diocese is among Illinois oldest and largest.
William A Gaston Boston financier and longtime Massachusetts political figure died at Killingly Farm in Barre at age 68 after weeks of illness. He was a frequent Democratic gubernatorial candidate and in 1922 narrowly lost the U S Senate race to Henry Cabot Lodge, with a recount confirming Lodge ahead by 7 354 votes.
Rumors say Everett Sanders may take a leave of absence due to health and possibly retire to return to law practice in Indianapolis. Sanders, a former Indiana congressman, has served since 1924 and was once viewed as a potential vice presidential candidate. Pilot Raymond D. Mrs. Henry B. Quinlan, 48, wife of an AT&T auditor, was shot to death in her New York City apartment. Patrolman Walter Scharland, 45, was wounded and hospitalized, claiming self defense after Quinlan allegedly fired and he was attacked. Witnesses dispute the officer’s account. The report also details five drownings in New York waters and a separate drowning near Toledo, involving multiple victims and cramp-related deaths.
In Birmingham Iowa a gray haired man, Paul J. Evander, dined alone in the Bankhead Hotel private room for forty five minutes and ordered four courses removed for four empty chairs. He left Seattle twenty eight years ago to seek gold in the Klondike and never saw his wife and three children again. On the anniversary of their disappearance he repeats a yearly ritual, keeping a dinner for five with four empty chairs.
Della Harter, 21, student nurse from Spencerville, Colorado, slipped from balance while trying to enter an elevator between two floors and fell four stories into an open shaft, dying instantly at Rob inwood Hospital in Toledo, Ohio on July 17.
