Enormous losses reported as a million acres of peanuts and corn from Chat tanooga Tennessee to Paducah Kentucky were inundated four to fifteen feet by the Tennessee River flood. Losses exceed $1,000,000 with hundreds of cattle drowned and many people made homeless.
Reuters reports the German steamship Syria, 3607 tons gross, owned in Hamburg, was sunk by a Russian submarine. The crew and Swedish pilots were rescued.
In Baltimore and Washington on July 17 officials signaled the submarine Deutschland may sail soon. The United States accepts it as a merchant vessel. allies argue it is a warship. British and French embassies delivered views to the State Department as diplomatic efforts continue.
In Parliament John Dillon pressed Lord Robert Cecil for immediate publication of communications on the Deutschkind German submarine issue and a public briefing on negotiations with the United States. Cecil said correspondence is proceeding and not for public release.
French aviators again bombarded Sofia the capital of Bulgaria, the French War Office reported. From July 1 to July 15 artillery actions east of the Vardar, skirmishes near Kalinovo and along the Jumnitza and Osin, frequent patrol engagements, and raids by aviation against military targets at Sofia Strumnika Bogodomina and Fort Rupel are noted. An enemy squadron bombarded Topcin camps on July 9 without result.
