A German submarine torpedoed the Orduna without warning, the blast churning water within ten feet of the steamer's rudder. Officials report damage minimal but fear possible further assaults as tensions rise in wartime Atlantic waters.
Cunard liner Orduna with 227 aboard including 22 Americans was struck without warning by a German submarine on July 9. The ship escaped by seconds, pursued and shelled as passengers sought lifeboats. UK vessel Jeannette reached aid after hours, and American protestant officials including William C. Thompson prepared to file formal appeals to Washington.

A small pasteboard box addressed to Governor Hammond was opened in the Minnesota Capitol office. DETECTIVES found a fuse attached to a cartridge with misleading contents including a mirror and beard sample. The box bore a Minneapolis postmark and a veneer of antiwar protest.

The Court of Inquiry ruled the Lusitania was unarmed and sunk by a German submarine torpedo. It exonerated Captain Turner and Cunard, praised passenger conduct, deemed lifeboat and lifebelt facilities adequate, and noted 5000 cases of general ammunition on board with no explosion.
Dr Francis Delafield of New York, noted physician and author, who served as consulting physician after President McKinley’s assassination, died today at his sister Miss Emma H Delafield’s home in Noroton Connecticut.
South Wales miners executives return to Cardiff after failed negotiations with Walter Runciman. They seek a 5 percent wage rise and cancellation of the no strikes proclamation. Tribunal set to try striking miners if no compromise, with steps to conserve coal and limit exports and seaborne movements.

Leo M. Frank, death-sentence defendant later commuted to life, was stabbed in the throat by fellow inmate William Creen at the State Prison Farm in Milledgeville. The attack, from behind with a butcher knife, left Frank seriously wounded but alive, with doctors unsure of recovery. Creen apologized, saying he acted alone and would face consequences.
