He hosted presidents and notable figures, last entertaining Admiral Dewey. He attributed success to honesty, fair dealing, hard work, and universal good will.
Milwaukee July 17 The Treasury Department of the United States Government plans an extensive raid targeting sailors and captains suspected of smuggling goods into the country from Canadian ports.
Mrs George W Lane wife of a wealthy farmer was found dead by her husband in the wood shed at Canton Illinois. Developments indicate murder by strangling with motive and perpetrators still mysteries.
Irene A. Canning age sixteen is in Goshen under guard after traveling with George Beckley from Middleville. Dr. Pease of Hartford allegedly tried to hypnotize her on a train. She claims guardianship by Rev George Tarbox and inheritance of a $300000 estate. The sheriff hunts for Pease with no reply yet.
A telegram addressed to Rev. Geo. Tarbox from Goshen Chief of Police was received but could not be delivered in Savannah on July 17. The telegram mentions Tarbox and a Miss Canning as his ward, but their connection remains unknown.
Ambert Stupp aged 20 from Lewisburg Preble County rushed from Dayton to Air Hill twenty miles away to obtain a marriage license for Miss Erma Good aged 19. After securing his father’s written consent he returned by 10 PM and left again at 10 15 for the ceremony with a trainee line and carriage. the couple wed near midnight despite the late start.
London July 17. British Ambassador Lord Pauncefote said negotiations with the United States on a Nicaragua canal and other pending treaties show good promise though no tangible results yet. He hopes a treaty meeting President McKinley and the British Cabinet can be reached, step by step, by October. He praised Americans as genial and stressed continued joint talks with the Marquess of Lansdowne.
Washington announces Wappenhaus, who predicted Indiana weather since 1870, has tendered his resignation. Willis E. Moore names W T Blythe, with service since the bureau's founding, to replace him, transferring from New Orleans to Indianapolis.
