In Chicago on July 17 William Van Alen saloon keeper and Frederick Gondorf traveling salesman, once partners, dueled after a quarrel. They fired through glass doors. Gondorf was mortally wounded, Van Alen shot in the thigh and arrested.
Washington July 17 officers recently named to new volunteer regiments are listed with assignments including Captain William H Gillenwater Thirty first Infantry at Ft Thomas and Major Clyde D V Hunt at Camp Meade. Other officers and posts include First Lieutenant Walter P Corbett Thirtieth Infantry Ft Sheridan and Captain Guy V Henry Twenty sixth Infantry Plattsburg Barracks.
At 5 a.m. near Farmers in Morehead Kentucky Mrs. McGlothen tried to move chickens off the railroad to spare them from a passing Chesapeake and Ohio freight. She was struck and killed, her body ground to pieces.

In New Orleans on July 17 Charles J. Rockel, a Metropolitan Bank runner, was shot by Engelhart Bieber a discharged soldier. The bullet struck his suspenders buckle and rode into his back, pulled out with the suspenders. Bieber claimed Rockel owed him $905. Rockel was wounded but survived the incident.
In Mt Sterling Ky on July 17 a large Democratic gathering adopted resolutions urging each county to appoint delegates to a Lexington meeting on August 2 to organize a state Democratic convention. The group pressed for county committee self selection and asked the press to publish the proceedings.
In Frankfort on July 17 officials outlined campaign setup with a Louisville headquarters and a five member committee to decide on debates or challenges. Attorney General Taylor backs joint debates, but most party leaders oppose them citing risk of negro issue manipulation. Hartford City Ind July 17 Ralph Schelly aged years lies dead at his Montpelier home after four companions attacked him during a play quarrel. Two held him while others struck with a rock on the neck and back and kicked him. He died from injuries described as lockjaw symptoms after the assault.

Mills and his son James Mills are jailed in Plain City after Davenport was fatally wounded by a knife. Mills and his son allegedly engaged in a melee using beer bottles and clubs before the stabbing. Davenport, about 50, died within ten minutes despite medical aid. Coroner Parks and Marshal Latham attended. Mills and his son were arrested following the incident. Davenport was reportedly seeking trouble and may have been connected to the seiling case.
Five masked robbers forced entry at 3 a.m. into the home of Daniel Miller near Mansfield. They bound the farmer and his son, rifled a safe after failing to find a key, and escaped with over $1,000 in cash and bonds along with jewelry. Mrs Miller’s life is believed in danger. One son freed himself after hours. Miller recognizes two voices if heard again.
Capitalists here have taken up options on the Sixteen-to-One and Crystal Silver mines in Idaho's Coeur d'Alene district and closed the purchase through John B. Finch. The Sixteen-to-One cost $650,000 and the Crystal $225,000, with plans to add machinery to boost output and dividends.
