Eastern capitalists accompanied by engineers visited Cincinnati to study traction lines amid takeover rumors. Two main propositions emerged a possible purchase of controlling stock in Ohio interurban lines and interest in the Union Depot scheme with potential eastern end connections. Several traction companies are named with specified capitalizations as part of the large Middle West deal.
A Paris dispatch reports Hubert Latham, famed Anglo-American aviator, killed by a buffalo while hunting in French Congo. Belmont said he personally contributed about $250000 to the Parker campaign and warned bookkeeping was not strict in campaign funds.
In Mount Vernon Newfoundland a disease dubbed the farm of death claims nine victims. John Ackerman died after cramps, fever, and convulsions. Survivors on the Palm farm include Godfrey Palm and his family who perished in similar fashion. Ackerman avoided farm produce yet died in a slow decline.
Herbert Knox Smith resigns as commissioner of corporations citing loyalty to former President Roosevelt and plans to join his forces. Luther Conant Jr. of Brooklyn likely to succeed him as deputy commissioner. Change effective after July 18, with Smith to meet with Colonel Roosevelt in New York to discuss political plans.
New York reports that investigators pursue a murder case against rosenthal’s killers at the Metropole, with whispers of police collusion and a grand jury probe. Whitman says ten gamblers and seven officers are named as possible conspirators. Shapiro’s interrogation continues as Mrs. Rosenthal aides the inquiry.
Senator Jones pressed Belmont about campaign contributions while police push hunt for Rosenthal killers. Witnesses recall large sums and cash payments amid claims of hypnotic influence and threats, as Becker faces related homicide charges.
Julian Diaz, a member of the U S Volunteer Life Saving corps, saved Miss Ethel Jameson from drowning at Echo bay New Rochelle. She thanked him with a hug and a kiss and refused to share his address, saying only that she lives in the Bronx.
