Jailer trials proceed today after prolonged battles over Caleb Powers with City Attorney Thornton repeatedly absent causing postponements. The hearings focus on responsibility for the disputed case and related jail administration issues.
Special Dispatch from Albany reports Superintendent Francis Hendricks of the State Insurance Dept rejects claims his testimony and preliminary report on the Equitable Life investigation were edited. The issued statement includes an affidavit by stenographer William A. Comstock asserting sole authorship of notes and no changes to the report. The governor and his counsel were the only outsiders to view the material.
Edward Park, an American believed linked to the Higginson jewel theft, was arrested on arrival in Christiania from the Scandinavian-American Line steamer United States. The 25 000 jewel theft remains unexplained as police note Park may be a physician and tied to a Higginson child.

Special dispatch from Boise reports General W. W. Blackmar commander in chief of the Grand Army of the Republic died today of interstitial nephritis. Born July 25, 1841, in Bristol Pennsylvania he rose from Fifteenth Pennsylvania cavalry to captain at Five Forks. He later served as Massachusetts judge advocate general before being elected Commander in Chief at the last National Encampment. John R. King of Washington succeeds him as Senior Vice Commander.
In Fermo Italy July 16 during mass at the Women’s Hospital chapel the roof collapsed killing sixteen women and injuring thirty-two. The tragedy occurred as mourners gathered for the service prompting emergency response and investigations into the incident. Fire and civil protection teams evacuated debris and treated the injured at local facilities.

In Terre Haute Indiana today July 16 heat caused two people to be overcome with one hotel incident and a passerby found in the street both in critical condition. The day’s temperature reached 98.2 degrees with many suffering who could not seek shade in parks.
Texarkana Arkansas July 16 the body of Charles Reynolds of New York who yesterday in a fit of jealousy shot his bride of six weeks was found in an alley today he had shot himself a note in his pocket said remorse over shooting his wife caused his suicide Mrs Reynolds is expected to recover.
Bizerta reports the Farfadet submarine sank at Sidi Abdallah on July 6. Four crew in the forward compartment drowned instantly, eight in the after compartment struggled for hours to stop a leaking hatch with their jerseys. Only four bodies recovered. funeral delayed. Survivor Le Jean details rapid flooding, escape through the hatch, and a faulty cover. The wreck led to a towed-dry-dock recovery and France to inter the dead.
John Schiskloskas a Russian wanted in Belmont Mass for his wife’s murder was arrested by Sheriff Barr as he passed through La Junta on the Salta Fe Railroad. He confessed detailing a quarrel at a golf park that night, claimed she lied about her age and funds, and said he came to America from Poland five years ago. He will be held for Massachusetts authorities.
