Soviet note to China threatens other means if three day ultimatum on Manchuria crisis is not met. Moscow cites arrests of Russian citizens and ousting of staff on the Chinese Eastern Railway, demanding immediate release and cancellation of all orders before negotiations.
Five youths broke from the Juvenile Place of Detention after overpowering William Hall the 65 year old watchman and elevator operator. The escape occurred as Hall tended the playroom with nineteen boys present. Fourteen inmates did not participate. Participants include Jack Sisson 17 Edward Dohme 17 Lawrence Crew 17 and Thomas Donnan 16 all Baltimore residents. Sisson faced auto theft charges. Dohme is homeless.
Captain Dieudonne Coste, France's premier airman, returns to Villagoublay after a nearly 28 hour attempt to span the Atlantic to New York. A fierce westerly wind and high gas use forced him to turn back near the Azores, with plans to try again later.
Three persons in Cincinnati yesterday attempted to end their lives. Two succeeded. One left a note asking for a state electric chair to ease personal crisis, while another cited family troubles. Bernard Albers, 30, died by shotgun at home. note beside his body expressed despair.
Major Ludwik Idzikowski is killed when the Marshall Pilsudski crashes on Graiosa Island Azores after a long flight from Paris. Major Casimir Kubala survives with serious injuries and is hospitalized. The attempt, begun from Le Bourget, faced hurricane winds and a failing motor as rivals from France turned back.
State Prohibition Agent L. W. Fury and county police raided camps in the Miami Valley arresting Harry Cannon and Charles Fowler. More than 632 gallons of homebrew were seized and twelve men and women were ordered to leave the Little Miami River site at Plainville Bridge and Wooster Pike. Cannon faced liquor possession charges after a raid that found four and a half barrels and five quarts of beer. Fowler faced liquor possession charges as officers said two men were drinking in his camp. Forty-two quarts and eighteen pints were confiscated.
Prof. Bruce Williams of the University of Virginia political science department died in a Baltimore hospital after being found unconscious with a pistol nearby. The Roanoke native, 32, had suffered from ill health and had experienced a nervous downturn amid insomnia. Dr. John Latane, Johns Hopkins former dean, recalled his brilliance and troubling letters from the past year.
Dr. John Haynes Holmes at Community Church in New York denounces asceticism and sexual repression as a monstrous sin. He advocates open sex relations and monogamy based on love while opposing promiscuity and free-love practices.
Fred Stevens of 339 Baum Street told police he was assaulted by three men late Saturday near Fifth and Main. They forced him from a car at Tower Hill, stripped his clothes, left him in his underwear by a cool stream with $2 in his pockets. He gave a description of the trio.
Atlantic City reporters say a 50 year old law from 1880 will be used tomorrow to prosecute Mike Sursock owner of Seminole Indian Village in Atlantic City. He was arrested yesterday on charges of wilfully causing unnecessary pain to a living creature the alligator. Sursock bailed at $300 and will be arraigned before Magistrate Herman Satinover. S P C A agents said the show featured turning the alligator on its back and cruel treatment.
A 13 year old boy, Birdie Huff of 334 Lock Street, was seriously injured when a toy wagon he rode on collided with a fire plug on Lock Street near Third. He suffered fractures of all ribs on his right side and possible internal injuries. He was taken to General Hospital and police were told he was pretending to be a famous auto racer at the time.
Milwaukee July 14. Reported in court that girls forced to walk back after being left by a man have no legal recourse. District Attorney Boyle ordered the release of John Beck who forced Helen Wettstein from his car after she spurned his attentions.
Stan ley C Huffman Embry-Riddle operations manager landed a 110 horsepower Fleet plane from 2000 feet at Lunken Airport in a controlled dead stick inquiry. Over 5000 spectators watched as Huffman cut the gun and completed a perfect three point landing. Roy Mitchell, famed endurance flyer, also visited and will resume Cincinnati to Cleveland air mail runs Tuesday night.
A smooth white stone placed in a hen nest to boost egg production led to the snake raiding the nest and later dying. When visitors at James Perdue's Parsonsburg home found a lump in the snake and examined it, the missing stone was discovered, solving the mystery of dwindling eggs.
London July 14 King George attended divine service at Buckingham Palace this morning and will undergo a minor operation to drain an access on the right side of his head. The bulletin says a small surface of diseased bone may be present at the old operation site, with no alarm for the public.
A 73-year-old farmer, A. W. Miles of East Norwalk, drove at 60 mph fourteen miles east of Sandusky and plunged thirty feet into Lake Erie. He was unconscious and seriously injured but expected to recover. Witnesses said accelerator jammed and Miles lost control in fright as the car crossed tracks and toppled. He was thrown clear and rescued by passing motorists.
Lord Wilingdon Governor General of Canada will call on Hon. William Howard Taft Chief Justice of the United States Supreme Court at Taft's summer home in Murray Bay July 23 for an informal visit. The Governor General and Lady Wilingdon travel with staff to the lower St. Lawrence resort.
Senator King of Utah urged a revival of states rights as a counter to centralized government. Cincinnati lawyers Joseph S. Graydon and Judge Charles Bell spoke on constitutional questions, noting federal overreach and renewed interest in states sovereignty beyond the old Confederacy.
Paris reports a sharp wave of anti cocktail sentiment with Prof Guillain and Prof Sergent warning that drink mania from America harms culture and youth. They argue cocktails sap intellect, threaten national spirit, and may lead to cancer risks among the upper classes and young women.
In Tullahoma Tennessee sheriff warrants were issued for J N Spurrier and J O Anderson federal agents and Bruce H Ashburne after Ewin H Smith 22 was critically wounded during a chase in which liquor allegedly spilled from a fleeing car. Three companions were arrested for liquor transport and bonds set at 1000 dollars. John Matthew Smith, father of the wounded youth, secured warrants later.
Mrs Alice Roose Longworth and her daughter Paulina arrived in Cincinnati for a brief visit at her home. She remained silent on the Gann affair, offering no new comments beyond what reporters heard in Washington. Speaker Nicholas Longworth had reached Cincinnati about two weeks earlier.
