Open revolt erupts in the Senate as Democrats clash over immigration land leasing and vocational training bills. Republicans and Democrats disagree on many measures including child labor workmen's compensation and immigration.

Margaret Beutinger, 27, of Caldwell New Jersey, is charged after allegedly shooting Christopher Beutinger a New York coal broker in her Caldwell residence. Cleveland Street Railway Company paid nearly 1,000,000 in taxes, the largest lump sum by a public utility in Ohio. Cleveland had challenged the tax valuation fearing fare increases, with the city and company opposing taxes in Common Pleas and Appellate Courts, which ruled against the taxi.
President Wilson names United States District Judge Clarke of Cleveland as Associate Justice to replace Hughes on the Supreme Court. Clarke, noted for Ohio reforms and naturalization efforts, is viewed as a progressive Democrat and gifted Ohio orator.

In Lima Ohio on July 14, youths with shotguns fired at the Broadway Limited between Maples and Monroeville. Four passengers were wounded all on the rear observation car platform. Injured include R J Wood of Pittsburgh and H P Millet of Philadelphia and New York, Kiefer Newman of New Orleans, Bertha Gosweiler.
The naval militia of the United States begins its annual practice cruise from July 15 to 29. Eastern units depart from Boston New York Philadelphia and Norfolk to rendezvous at Block Island Sound with 270 officers and 4200 men aboard nine reserve battleships. Western forces sail from Oregon Marblehead and New Orleans to Port Angeles for a Sitka Alaska cruise.
Detroit July 14 Special report says Carl Dolly 21 survived being run over by a freight train after throwing himself under the wheels. He was severed just below the waist and says he did it due to worry but refuses to reveal the cause. Recovery is impossible.
Madrid reports martial law across Spain as troops guard trains in strike districts. Two attacks on trains were repelled by soldiers firing over heads. King Alfonso held talks with officials and sought a meeting between government and strike leaders.
The body of James G. Hurty a New York banker missing since early June washed ashore at Albany Island near Cheboygan Mich. He had begun a long canoe trip with Charles Marcelle also of New York. Marcelle disappeared and no trace has ever been found. They were last seen June 4 leaving Cheboygan for Sault Ste. Marie.
The American steamer Korea arrived in New York from London on its final Atlantic trip before being sold under the Japanese flag. It will sail to San Francisco for takeover under Captain Togo, a nephew of the famed admiral. The Korea carried 17 crew from the Seaconnet, which struck a mine near Yarmouth on June 18 and was a total loss, though all crew were saved.
Wilson left Washington late this afternoon on the Mayflower for a weekend cruise down the Potomac and into Chesapeake Bay. He is accompanied by Mrs. Wilson and a party of relatives and expects to return early Monday morning.
British forces advance on a four mile front between the Ancre and Somme rivers. After twenty four hours of bombardment German defenses collapse as General Haig’s troops push through near Mametz Wood and the Bray Bapaume road toward Combles. News of the victory spreads through London and allied capitals.
Berlin reports a furious struggle between German and British forces on the Somme front centering Mametz Forest and Trones Woods. The German War Office says English attacks were repulsed though fresh assaults followed as fighting continues. Russian forces on the eastern front were repulsed at Zarepche with 169 prisoners and two machine guns.
