Otto Carmichael reports that New York’s financial leadership boosts national exports and capital for investment. Indiana cities near Indianapolis surge with railroad and manufacturing work as interurban railways expand, pulling in labor and new construction across the Hoosier State.
Washington reports the fiscal year 1901 shows imports at 822,756,533 and exports at 1,487,656,544 with an excess of 664,900,011. Exports rise 93,173,462 from last year and exceed the 1898 peak by 49,467,335, aided by Hawaii and Porto Rico trade shifts.
The Eighth Ohio known as the President's Own and the Twenty-second New York will camp at Camp Fillmore during Pan-American Exposition week. Ohio Day July 18 includes ceremonies and a musical program with Frank Gray and S H Clark among speakers. The Midway shows were shut after guards prevented Sunday entry.
In Glenwood Springs Colorado a well organized gang of pickpockets robbed about twenty Epworth Leaguers in Colorado Springs on their way to San Francisco. Victims include Dr James Wilson and family and Mrs Harrington of Dover Delaware. Railroads to issue back home tickets or county aid may be needed. Major S K Hooper of Denver Rio Grande arranged passes to Ogden for stranded passengers continuing west.
Salt Lake City hosts Epworth Leaguers as trains bring 20,000 visitors for the annual gathering. Attendees attend services and organ recitals at the Tabernacle and hear speakers including Dr. C. M. Boswell General Secretary A. C. Crews Geo E. Dougherty and MacLichter at a mass meeting in the Salt Lake Theater.
Rebecca Ellen Beard Smalley, fifteen, wife of John H. Smalley, spent the day with Sheriff Kershner in Dayton as habeas corpus proceedings seek her release. Judge McCann will hear the case tomorrow in Probate Court. Smalley claims possession after the marriage on June 21, while her parents deny she was 18.
Ohio Bryanites call to arms with a July 31 convention in Columbus to form a state ticket. Ten Cleveland aligned men frame a declaration urging free silver, endorse Chicago and Kansas City platforms, and invite William Jennings Bryan to lead the movement against Col Kilbourne. Isaac Sherwood named as possible governor candidate.
Mrs Cordelia Botkin's attorneys plan to file a habeas corpus petition in state court then seek a U.S. Supreme Court review. They argue the poisoned candy mail scheme may not be a crime here and that trials must occur where the crime happened.
Deputy Sheriff Joseph Manning was killed a mile from Middlesboro Kentucky in an ambush while en route to arrest rioting suspect Mc Creary. Accompanying officer John Turner was uninjured as the Mc Crearys and relatives are pursued. Authorities anticipate retaliation if the suspects are captured.
James H. Moore at his Lake Geneva home emphatically denies that he or his brother W H Moore sold any holdings in the Chicago Rock Island and Pacific Railroad to J P Morgan or to anyone else as reported by telegraph from New York.
Thomas Murray, 40, described as a filthy vagrant and former Cincinnati Workhouse inmate, arrived in Hamilton wearing six suits and three hats. He claims Cheshire England as birthplace and seeks Minnesota, after two weeks travel. a special inquiry by Mayor Bosch suggested a lunacy warrant may be sought.
Wabash Indiana July 14 A chew of tobacco will cost Howard McCaughey three months imprisonment in the Jeffersonville Reformatory. The young man, once sentenced to three years for causing a daughter’s death, had hoped for parole but was found with tobacco and paroled action delayed until fall.
Lord Kitchener reports Broadwood's Brigade surprised Reitz and captured Steyn's brother and others. Steyn himself escaped in his shirt sleeves.
Rev. Dr. Daniel W. Wright former rector of Heavenly Rest Episcopal Church Springfield Ohio faces a one year probation set by Bishop Vincent after intoxication charges. His wife presented empty whisky bottles to support accusations and claims he paid undue attention to congregants. Wright now resides in Worthington near Columbus. He married Grace Gilbert in 1913 but the couple has no children and marital troubles are cited.
Columbus Bureau dispatch reports General J. W. Jones, head of the Columbus pension agency, facing removal amid charges against Chief Clerk Pontius. Testimony shows lax office discipline and disharmony between department heads. Allen, Jones' son-in-law, initiated the charges. fate of Pontius hinges on ongoing inquiry and potential replacement by General Charles Dick.
Carlisle D. Graham completed his fifth voyage through Niagara Falls rapids in a locust wood barrel weighing 165 pounds with ballast. The craft started at Maid of the Mist landing, circled near the cantilever bridge, entered foaming water, and emerged after about a mile long transit with minor injuries to Graham.
Aeronaut Paul Hague, known as Prof. Zeno, fell 500 feet after parachute failed to open during a 6 pm ascent at Island Park. He landed on his head and shoulders in a Springfield, Colorado corn field, suffering serious internal injuries though no bones were broken. Hague had married Mabel Brandon last week. she was badly injured June 22 when she fell from a balloon at the county fair grounds.
Kansas City July 14 reports show no relief from drought across the Southwest with temperatures exceeding 100 degrees in Western Missouri Kansas Indian Territory and Oklahoma continuing for a third week.
