Three Oaks Michigan, a village of 80 to 1000 residents, won the Dewey cannon sent from Manila for the Maine monument fund after raising 1132 dollars, more than one dollar per person. The prize was awarded to the locality with the largest per capita contribution.

Mrs Marion Moore of Brazil area died this morning while attempting to rescue her son Edward from a runaway mowing machine. The boy was thrown clear with minor injuries as the machine rolled over and crushed her body. The husband, a prominent local farmer, is overwhelmed with grief.
A Springfield letter to Chief of Police Bishop reports Kert M. E. Cooper heir to $500000 in Cripple Creek mining property and Texas real estate left by Captain Crego, a frontier figure who died recently in Cripple Creek. Cooper, once a local newspaper editor and Missouri political figure, later became penniless and lived in St Louis. Years ago in Texas he saved no life.
Captain W C Johnson of Cincinnati arrives in Philadelphia to meet Adjutant General Stewart and the General Executive Committee about arrangements for visiting veterans at the September National Encampment. He plans to return to Cincinnati tomorrow.

In Indianapolis on July 14 Colonel L. D. Richardson and Police Sergeant Kirkpatrick with Ernest Randolph arrived with a warrant for A. B. Howe a Hot Springs Ark chemist. They say he stole two diamonds valued at 600 from Richardson and that Howe bought them from Randolph for 15 with witnesses. Howe recovered the diamonds but refused to pay travel expenses.
Mr. George Ferguson of Washington D C visits Chicago with a scheme to raise 250000 dollars for a new Illinois College of Languages affiliated with the American University of Washington The project envisions a broad university scope with postgraduate and original work and seeks state memorial buildings in Illinois Ohio Pennsylvania New York and Massachusetts to honor the states through the project
