In Toledo Oregon on July 13 five men were arrested for participating in a riot that forced about thirty five Japanese workers from the Pacific Spruce mill. A crowd of over 200 loaded workers into cars paid them money and sent them away.
Twenty four Japanese expelled from Toledo Ore arrived in Corvallis and boarded trains to Portland. Four more Japanese from Toledo arrived that morning and followed to Portland. There was no disturbance in Corvallis.
Forty Moroccan tribesmen were killed and about sixty wounded in a battle with allied forces attached to the French near the Spanish zone border in Melilla Morocco. French troops pushed rebels back more than ten kilometers and reached Tatarutusak after a nightlong engagement with cannon fire audible at Spanish advances.
Two First Lieutenants Charles R. Hickey and Albert C. Perry were killed when their aircraft fell in a tail spin near Westbury New York. The plane towered from 700 to 1000 feet before bursting into flames. Mitchel Field officials sent an ambulance and wrecking crew to the scene as the charred bodies were removed. Both officers had two weeks training at Mitchel Field.
Detroit July 138 John R. Davis Prohibition Director for Michigan received orders from Washington to inventory the Detroit office before its consolidation August 1 with the Columbus Ohio office. It was unclear if Davis remains in place as officials would not comment. The nationwide plan to merge prohibition enforcement offices has been in motion for weeks with this instruction seen as the first direct sign Michigan headquarters may be abolished.

Eight scientific witnesses are en route to testify for Scopes while the defense considers calling schoolboys as witnesses. The Attorney General argues the Legislature has police power to regulate curricula and uphold the indictment as legal.
The combined estates of Robert Halstead, a magazine writer, and wife Clara Lunken Halstead, who died within days of each other, total about 590000. Mrs Halstead left 550000, Robert 40000, with major bequests to relatives and a remaining balance to the survivor. The wills dated June 8 1923 provide stock and property bequests and specify division if one predeceases the other.
