Rumors of Ku Klux presence at the Campbell County courthouse dreaded victimization as jurors failed to reach a verdict on Meyer Kling, charged with attacking Opal Hartig. The judge ordered more police to guard the proceedings as deliberations continued after a long wait and a deadly potential penalty loomed.
A Cincinnati telegram from E Houston, E L Douglass, J G Bradley and J C Brydon on behalf of nonunion coal fields in Kentucky West Virginia and Pennsylvania protests President Hardings settlement plan for the coal strike. They argue union wage subsidies harm the public and warn prices would rise if union mines resume at prewar wages.
A Pennsylvania Railroad train struck an automobile at a crossing near Hartford City Indiana. Five people died instantly and three were seriously injured including Celia Smilack, 14, Sophie Smilack, 13, and Mrs J Karklin of Cleveland. Celia Smilack was driving the car.
A runaway freight train dropped over Saluda Mountain on the Southern Railway line between Melrose and Saluda. The crew leaped to safety before the engine went over the incline. Officials cite defective brakes as the cause and say the train rode the safety track to the fall.
In Atlantic City New Jersey on July 13 sixteen thousand Elks paraded to close the Grand Lodge annual meeting. Theodore Roosevelt Assistant Secretary of the Navy spoke with Senator Edge and Representative Bacharach in attendance. The two hour procession featured forty bands and was led by retiring Grand Exalted Ruler William Wallace Mountain and new ruler J Edward Masters. Dense crowds lined the streets for the event.
The FTC told Congress a nationwide gasoline market monopoly persists due to interlocking Standard Oil stock ownership. It cites Montana and Rocky Mountain regions as evidence and urges new law forbidding common stock ownership in dissolved Sherman Act companies to restore competition.

Cincinnati business leaders led by James A. Reilly propose using the Blue Ash aviation field for air mail as a temporary Post Office Station. The plan seeks Postmaster Behymer's approval to cut Washington to Cincinnati delivery from eighteen to five hours with flights. If adopted, it could expand to a permanent air mail center and Army plane station, benefiting local bankers and industry.
The Hague July 13 The non Russian and Soviet talks on confiscated property faltered as the property sub commission vowed no point in continuing, signaling a likely rupture. A joint credits meeting is planned for tomorrow with Moscow reports suggesting a conciliatory statement may yet emerge.

Miss Lillian Schaffer 30 of 2605 Jefferson Avenue was found wandering near Eden Park reservoir after disappearing from home since Wednesday. Her father Joseph Schaffer reported her missing following multiple nervous breakdowns since her mother’s death. She spent the prior night at Booth Memorial Hospital Covington and left this morning.
