Concrete launches first motor propelled concrete boat
In Pittsburg on July 13 a 18 foot long concrete boat named the Concrete was launched on the Monongahela River before a large crowd. Built by W. M. Bowsey of Iron River Michigan in 1914 and donated to the naval reserves in 1917 it will make an 1800 mile voyage down the Ohio and Mississippi to Chicago to serve as a naval recruiting aid. Shipwrecked crew reach Honolulu after 900 mile open boat voyage
Captain Vaughan of the wrecked British bark John Murray arrived in Honolulu aboard a steamer from Fanning Island after a 13 day voyage with two seamen. Forty marooned sailors from the John Murray and the schooner Annie Larsen remained on Malden Island awaiting aid said to be coming from Australia. The John Murray sank May 22 and rescuers had earlier attempted to save the June 9 survivors.

First American field army to France halved in time
