A Buffalo parade drew about 80 000 marchers with the Cincinnati Elks leading between Chicago and Baltimore lodges. The Cincinnati group wore gray, purple bands and carried purple streamers. Covington and Newport lodges also showed well with period costumes.
Captain Hans Holm reports a shocking mass murder at Atilla island off Honduras. A stowaway named Robert McGill killed eleven aboard the Olympia and attempted to scuttle the ship after forcing women and children into a dory. Elsie Morgan survived by swimming ashore and hiding two days.
An apparent deliberate wrecking attempt on C H and D train No 36 the Chicago Express left at 8 45 pm with 150 passengers. A railroad tie was found across the track near Elmwood Carthage and hit as the train slowed. Officials including Marshal Ben Grote and a railway agent will investigate with Mayor Molloy promising full law action.
Jorge de la Cabera, a wealthy Mexican proprietor, was gored to death during a bull taming in his hacienda near San Luis Potosi after inviting many guests. The bull tossed him twenty feet and impaled him. Cabera died after refusing to explain his motive.
President Roosevelt told about 400 Long Island physicians that the Panama Canal would be a success despite difficulties at the isthmus and in the United States. He paid tribute to General Leonard Wood and praised sanitary engineers who cleaned Cuban cities.
George Wallace known as Louis Adams, a Cincinnati man, was arrested in Chicago charged with swindling Miss Alice Campbell of $1,000. Campbell, a schoolteacher, answered an advertisement for a trusted bank position and gave Wallace the cash bond before becoming suspicious and reporting the crime.
London report from Peking says Great Britain and the United States have agreed to safeguard each other’s trademarks in China, signaling a cooperative step in protecting intellectual property overseas.
Seven Cincinnati men on a new Swing traction line near Baldwin Ohio were badly burned when a bucket of gasoline was mistaken for water and placed on a stove to boil for spaghetti. Three men Nicholas Roberts Antonio Degarra and Antonio Roberts sustained fatal burns.
In London Ontario an American flag at City Hall was torn down and trampled after an American visitor at an Orangemen demonstration insulted Canada. About 800 Americans from Michigan had carried the Stars and Stripes through the streets earlier without incident. The Port Huron lodge flag was ripped and trampled by a mob near a hotel after the insult.
Meerdian Mississippi July 12 W E Etheridge and A N Davis joint owners of a Hickory sawmill eighteen miles west of here engaged in a duel both killed. The two men died without making a statement of the trouble.
Tangier July 12 Moham med el Torres reports imperial forces defeated the Moorish pretender near Ajda in northeast Morocco. The pretender fled, 180 of his men were killed, and Sultan troops captured many prisoners.
Chicago July 12 Walter Scott a famed speed eater bought a private secretary a private body guard and a private elevator before breakfast He negotiated a thirteen hour private train ride to New York through Santa Fe President Ripley The Great Northern Hotel staff were hired to handle begging letters and guard his rooms while the elevator served his suite on the hotels third floor
New York reports $35,000 raised today for Robert E Peary's Arctic expedition bringing total donations to $150,000. The Roosevelt awaits supplies as preparations run since October 15 1904 with American donors dominating funding. Mrs Peary may sail with the expedition as the ship moves to Sydney Cape Breton and Erik accompanies northward.
St. Petersburg dispatch reports M Muravieff resigns as chief peace plenipotentiary and PM Witte as favored successor. Emperor’s assent uncertain until Lamsdorff’s audience. Peace prospects brighten with Witte’s potential leadership and hints of a Russo Japanese alliance.
Urbana Ohio July 12 David Keim of Napoleon and Laura Keim of Urbana were remarried here today after a prior divorce fifteen years ago. They had each remarried after separating, and the daughter aged fifteen opposed the remarriage of her parents.
