Pilots L. W. Mendell and R. B. Reinhart, flying the biplane Angeleno, reported about 18,000 miles covered in nearly ten days aloft near Culver City. They entered the 228th hour of continuous flight at 7 29 30 p m and asked that no damage be done. They offered $500 each by Durant if the 300 hour mark is reached.
Tony Scionoff and Robert Saunders claim they were beaten by dry agents after a liquor raid at Hillards. Judge Benson W. Hough ordered an investigation and postponed sentencing. Several defendants received prison terms, including two from Steubenville and others from Akron and Uniontown, with affidavits about agents’ conduct to be reviewed.
President Hoover conferred with Senate Republican leaders on tariff revisions and the adequate protection yardstick. Automakers including Ford and GM backed a 10 percent rate if countervailing duties remain, while leaders urged moving swiftly to pass the bill before December. In Eufaula Alabama July 11 police led by bloodhounds hunted a slayer who killed Jack Hines 25 and attacked Beatrice Clark 18 after a car ride. Clark is in critical condition and the suspect fled in Hiness wrecked car thirty two miles away. witnesses described a black male driver armed with a pistol.
In Pembroke Wales on July 11 a naval funeral at sea honored twenty one crew members of the submarine H-47 after its sinking in St George's Channel. The ceremony followed the decision to abandon salvage as Battleship Rodney led six destroyers and five submarines over the wreck sixty fathoms deep. Wreaths were cast and guns fired a final salute in accordance with British naval custom.
In Columbus at Port Columbus the plane City of Columbus in a test flight struck a car driven by W E McColly. McColly’s face was cut while pilot John A Collings landed safely after the undercarriage struck the car.
Premier Raymond Poincare urged the Chamber of Deputies to unconditionally ratify France’s war debt agreements with the United States and the Melion-Berenger pact before August 1. He warned the international financial plan could fail otherwise, stressing France must honor its obligations to redeem American loans and protect the Young plan.
Sheriff reports Mrs. Vivian Scraper confessed to holding up two Security Benefit employees and stealing $14,000 on June 28. She did not name others. Accomplice Cecil Streit held without charge. Marie Rainey released. Loot found sewn in a chair and hidden in a picture frame.
Alfred A. Oliver an ex convict and suburban real estate dealer identified as a bank robber was en route to Colorado in heavy restraints and an Oregon Boot. He was named in connection with the Irvington State Bank hold up at Indianapolis and the Lamar Colorado bank robbery where four were killed. He denied the Lamar charge calling it a bum rap while officers guarded him. The transport included weaponry and the bank employee and customer who identified him yesterday stood nearby.
Theodore Baraker 22 of Louisville Kentucky died in Clark County Jail from bullet wounds suffered in a hotel gun battle with Detective Oliver Holderby and Detective Howard Roush. Baraker had been indicted for the slaying and was to be arraigned. detectives questioned him about a Cincinnati automobile he was driving.
Akron theater owners met after two bomb incidents to offer a reward for arrests. The Ideal Theater was wrecked by a midnight blast in the ticket booth with no injuries. An attempted bombing at the Liberty Theater followed, a man with a bag being stopped by a merchant policeman.
In Columbus July 11, T B Sellers head of the Ohio Inspection Bureau of Fire Underwriters said statewide fire insurance rates may be reduced within days. Cincinnati City Manager C O Sherrill had protested high Cincinnati rates despite local hazard reductions. The tentative cut would affect mercantile and manufacturing risks and dwellings, though specifics were not released. The announcement cites overall state fire loss experience as the reason for the possible reduction.
In London on July 11 Ambassador Dawes held a multi hour private discussion with Prime Minister Ramsay MacDonald in the House of Commons. Talks focused on scrapping six submarines from the current build with attendant craft and shifting naval work to home dockyards to aid employment. Officials say discussions continue with no final decision, and MacDonald may visit the United States if invited.
Paris dispatches report a military plot in Bucharest to dethrone seven year old King Michael tied to a royal rift over his upbringing. Queen Marie and Regent Nicholas oppose the curriculum. Field Marshal Angelescu among 200 arrested. Marie travels to Bled with Prince Carol while Carol’s proximity stirs speculation.
Walter A. Aiken purchasing agent at 6113 Gladys avenue College Hill sues Marie Louise Aiken for divorce in Domestic Relations Court citing gross neglect. The couple, married July 29 1927, are represented by Dinsmore Shohl Sawyer.
London July 11 Home Secretary Clynes says Trotsky cannot visit Britain drawing protests in the House. First steps toward normalizing relations with Soviet Russia are to be taken this week via a communication to Moscow, hoping Russian representatives may come to London by month’s end.
Leon Trotsky, seeking urgent medical treatment and scientific work in England, had his visa request rejected after the Home Secretary’s department decision. Trotsky, estranged from the Stalin regime and living in exile in Constantinople, earlier sought entry via Germany and other routes without success, amid Labour government sensitivities.

Indictments filed against Clarke Bros private bank leaders James Rae Clarke Hudson Clarke Jr Philip L Clarke and John F Booker for conspiracy and mail fraud. It follows a pending John Doe hearing on management as depositors complain. IRS and Irving Trust findings show bank owed more than 380000 plus 440995 charged to owners. Bank failed amid 4 to 5 million in missing assets.
In York South Carolina Judge J K Henry holds that abduction is not charged when a male from another state persuades a girl under 15 to marry in South Carolina. Adam Tippett of Salisbury North Carolina wed Claire Foxworth of Salisbury in York on March 23. London report says Ambassador Dawes ends non smoking rule in the American Embassy waiting room after a visitor asks to smoke.
College women earn more with more education but avoid high salary fields. Dr. Margaret Elliott cites 1752 respondents: 55.5 percent teach, only 3.7 percent earn over 3000 in teaching while 8.2 percent in commerce and 7.2 percent in manufacturing exceed that. Broadway work offers higher pay than Main Street with city size affecting earnings. Also notes nominations for federation leaders and praise for women’s role in international affairs.
Police at the First District Station detained a woman claiming to be silent film star Clara Bow. She turned out to be Iola Carlisle, 19, of 1014 Vine Street Newport. She posted $15 bond and was released.
