A British note sparks a fierce tug over whether the United States may grant free passage or toll rebates to American ships through the Panama Canal. Debates hinge on the Hay Pauncefote treaty and the Panama bill as lawmakers clash over discrimination versus national interests.
A mob attacked nonunion teamsters in Toledo on July 11 injuring three severely and fatally wounding one with a brick. Police arrested fifteen as guards armed with revolvers escorted wagons past picket lines, while leaders Gompers Morrison Mitchell faced controversy over reform.
The empress consort has fallen ill this autumn and her prevailing frailty causes anxiety to the court physician. She is described as the mother of seven sons and one daughter in the royal household.
The House, by 222 to 1, adopted thirteen articles of impeachment against Judge Robert W. Archbald, former district judge now on the commerce court. Representative Farr voted no. managers for the Senate trial were named: Clayton, Floyd, Webb, Davis, Sterling, Howland, Norris. A resolution authorized counsel and expenses. the Senate will be informed tomorrow.
The Prohibition Party in Atlantic City elected Virgil G. Hinshaw as national chairman after an all day battle. The insurgents won control of the platform and rules, including direct nominations and a chairman chosen by the convention. Disorder broke into chants and prayers as Hinshaw secured the fifth ballot win.
Congress and the War Department reach a militia pay agreement. Militiamen receive one fourth of regular army initial pay. senior militia officers get five percent of equivalent regular army pay. Also, the United States signs an extradition treaty with Honduras, promising extradition across the western hemisphere.
William Lorimer of Illinois defended himself in a three hour speech attacking newspapers and political enemies. He charged a plot to oust him and introduced affidavits claiming money was offered to votes for Roosevelt. He contrasted his defense with past February 1911 testimony and asserted a conspiracy by press and corporate forces against him.
The House approved the Clayton contempt bill 232 to 18. It mandates trial by jury for indirect contempt of federal court, aiming to shape outcomes in such cases if the Senate and president act.
In London on July 11 strike breakers at the Surrey docks leaving for lunch were stoned and pelted with bottles by sympathizers of the transport dock strikers. Police were unable to quell the riot as it raged through the noon hour and many workers were injured, some seriously.
A gas explosion at 9 AM in the Panama mine of Ben Franklin Coal Co in Moundsville West Virginia killed eight men and injured three likely fatally. Victims include Joseph Marshilla Mike Rodénna Joseph Markeno Alvy Hurley Leslie Wilson Andrew Chesky William Chesky and Joseph Cannalie. Injured are William Hupp fire boss David Brooks and Joseph Manilers. All but Hurley and Wilson were foreigners. An investigation will begin tomorrow as workers prepared the mine for a resumed operation.
Atlantic City July 11. John Wanamaker, born in Philadelphia, celebrates his seventy fourth birthday with health reported as excellent. Senator Tillman proposes a senate resolution endorsing a maximum size battle ship, called the Terror and Simplicity, to avert bankruptcy amid naval armament debates. Wanamaker has recently funded education efforts in India and remains a prominent philanthropist in business and social circles.
New York reports a swelling rate of suicides across 100 cities, with 19.6 per 100000 population last year versus 1.7 in 1910. The census put 1910 area rate at 16.0, while cities like San Diego Elmira Davenport and Sacramento show high per capita figures. The rise occurs mostly in smaller cities as New York 16.5 and Chicago 21.4.
Enid Oklahoma July 11 Judge Ben Lindsey of Denver replied to a telegram from George L Thompson and others at the Atlantic City Prohibition convention stating he would not accept the prohibition presidential nomination. He cited his promises to the progressive party and loyalty to the progressives, while denying any comment on a possible vice presidency with the Progressive Chicago convention.
