Forty or more passengers were injured when five Pullman cars derailed near Enfield North Carolina on the Florida New York line. In Whitesburg Kentucky on July 10 David Hughes 23 was drowned by friends celebrating his wedding. The serenade party seized him and dumped him in a nearby lake where he drowned. Two men William Wright and James Farmer were arrested on charges as instigators. Hughes had married a month earlier and just begun housekeeping. The bride, a mountain girl, was frightened by the intrusion. The custom of serenading often leads to injuries.
