Charles Evans escaped from Kosciusko County Jail aided by his sister Birdie who talked with him and helped pick the Yale lock on the cage door. The escape occurred last night in Wabash Indiana and Evans had been imprisoned for grand larceny after a recent release from the Michigan City Penitentiary. The other prisoners alerted staff but no one else attempted to follow. Evans has not been recaptured.

A severe hail and thunderstorm hit Jeffersonville Indiana at 12 30 pm lasting ninety minutes. Rainfall reached 4 74 inches the highest on record. Hailstones egg sized struck the government depot flooding 38 of 40 rooms with three feet of water. Government supplies suffered extensive damage and dozens of houses flooded while streets became rivers. John Speiths electric light plant was submerged disrupting business.
A federal dispatch reports the gang that raided trains near St. Louis last month plotted to rob the Pennsylvania pay car of Louisville Division near Jeffersonville Indiana. The pay car arrived June 12 quietly and was moved from the center of a passenger train under heavy armed guard by company detectives, and authorities actions likely prevented the attack.
John Haley railway employee conductor on the Erie and Pittsby line was shot in the back aboard a passenger train departing for Cleveland. He died en route to the hospital. Haley, of Niles, left a wife and five children. Police have no suspect or motive yet.
James Green and William Irvin, roommates in Akron, were robbed at their North Hill home when a stranger confronted Green at noon with a revolver. Green was bound, the thief searched the house, and on exiting he robbed Irvin and his son of a few dollars and a gold watch.
The Dairy and Food Commission announces an active campaign against adulterated sugars. Beginning next week, about thirty warrants will be issued in Columbus Cincinnati Cleveland Toledo and Dayton to arrest dealers selling low grade sugar tinted with ultramarine blue. A severe fire in Columbus Colorado destroyed Arthur Mowrey’s livery stable at 261 Twentieth Street. The Twentieth Street Engine House and Mrs Mull’s residence suffered heavy damage. Four firefighters from No 11 Engine were burned, with Fireman F J Reed in critical condition. Five horses died and total losses reach 7700 dollars.
Solomon Knight, 22, a colored prisoner from Champaign County, serving two years for burglary, was killed today at Mansfield reformatory when a derrick fell during wall work. Knight, transferred from Columbus last September, would have been released August 2.

Count Boniface de Castelilane, husband of Anna Gould, has been blackballed by the Jockey Club of Paris. The vote tally shows 288 ballots against him, while his younger brother, up for membership then, was elected. The decision blocks his joining the club in Paris.
About 2,500 children performed at the Cincinnati Building July 10 with a wind and rain storm causing a rush for the doors. In Columbus a janitor William St Clair, 50, was found hanging after slashing his throat, said to be out of work.
