Ex-Congressman Joseph C. Sibley, present since Monday observing the presidential situation, closed his Chicago headquarters in the Auditorium and returned to his Erie, Pennsylvania home after indicating willingness to accept the nomination if offered.
Chicago July 10 Prominent Democratic leaders meet with William Jennings Bryan to discuss a Vice Presidential candidate. Bryan favors a poor Northern Democrat aligned with the silver cause who is not wealthy. Possible rivals include McLean Sibley Sewell and Williams with some opposition noted in Ohio delegation.
CHICAGO July 10 The convention adjourned tonight to 10 o clock tomorrow, signaling a likely defeat for John R. McLean for Vice President. Delegates reassembled after long sessions and leaders debated a hasty nomination. A strong current favors Sibley of Pennsylvania as a drafted, moneyed alternative for the ticket.
National Chairman Hanna Hon. John Mullholland and ex-Congressman Farquhar arrived in Canton to find Gov. McKinley receiving Chicago Convention updates. They praised his health, discussed future executive committee decisions, and learned of Frank Hurd’s Toledo death affecting McKinley. Hanna declined to name committee personnel.
At an ice cream festival in Wilbur, Tyler County, James Pratt and William Weekley were fatally stabbed during a fight after Pratt jostled a girl named Conaway. A youth named Roland Turner stabbed both Pratt and Weekley. Turner was arrested in Middlebourne with no bail.
Ten thousand people welcomed the Muncie Elks home from Cincinnati with fireworks and music. The city band, second prize winner, led the parade from the depot to the Elks Lodge. Fireworks alone cost about $2000. A second reception followed at the club rooms.
The Duckno Club members planned to adjourn and return home on the noon train, but late afternoon nominations and squabbles kept most from leaving. The First Regiment Band and about thirty Ducks departed at noon, while the rest stayed for the Vice Presidential nomination and spent much of the day at the Coliseum.
The deceased wife's sister bill passed its third reading in the House of Lords by a margin of 142 votes to an unreported opposing tally. The measure moves toward final approval, drawing debate over propriety and social norms in parliament.
