A record heat wave sweeps the eastern United States, with temperatures spiking across major cities from Maine to Washington. Citizens seek shade and relief as thermometers climb, while officials issue advisories and warn of heat-related risks.
The first general heat wave of the year causes dozens of deaths and many prostrations across the East and Midwest. Jamestown New York reports a marathon ended at hour 178 due to extreme heat. Ohio records eight deaths and seven drownings as rain cools the region.
Two deaths and ten prostrations were recorded today from extreme heat during the past thirty six hours in Washington. Joseph Hawkins 21 of Clarendon is named among those affected.
Vincent Kerens, heir to a $1.9 million Kerens estate share, has met five years of sobriety and good behavior per the will and a St. Louis Union Trust Co petition seeks a court order to release the funds. Sisters object to payment to Vincent while holds remain, as the trust company notes.

Washington July 9 The calendar reform plan faces worker concerns about thirteen months rent a year but proponents expect thirteen months pay. A National Committee on Calendar Simplification will survey industry science and labor groups and report within the year to inform possible international agreement and a congressional bill. The first day falling on Sunday could enable the change by 1983 if adopted.

In Warren Pennsylvania on July 9 191X twelve year old Joseph Font died from burns he suffered while playing burned at the stake with friends. The boy wore crepe paper to imitate an Indian headdress and was tied in with burned cork when the paper caught fire. He screamed as the flames spread and his playmates fled.
Harold Graham a butter and egg salesman fried an egg on the sidewalk in front of his Paterson New Jersey shop. Spectators watched as he cracked the shell and within four minutes the egg was fried hard amid a 94 degree official heat reading.
Gov Alfred E Smith announced that if elected President he will call a conference on farm relief immediately after election to craft a concrete program aligned with the Houston platform. He said he would transmit a definite plan and necessary legislation to Congress at its opening session.
John Finkley a 35 year old tailor of Price Hill died at Bethesda Hospital after his car collided head-on with a Moore's Hill farmer Clarence Cobert on the Louisville pike near Cleves. Cobert was exonerated by witnesses and released. Finkley leaves a widow and had moved to Cincinnati from Chicago ten months ago. Funeral plans not yet made.

Records in a Senate inquiry show Georgia postal employees paid monthly sums from 8.50 to 12.50 to the Georgia Republican Central Committee. Treasurer John W. Martin said payments were voluntary and used to cover committee expenses, salaries, and rent averaging about 1,200 dollars monthly. Senator George pressed if funds were truly voluntary. Martin insisted he solicited none.
A man described as 5 feet 7 inches tall with dark hair and beard attempted to grab Miss Amelia Albert 19 near the Engineer Building at noon. The attack mirrors prior assaults on four girls within a month as Maj. Arata orders patrols to hunt the suspect.
Jack Latting, wealthy peach grower, died when his car overturned near Pinehurst, North Carolina. Mrs. Marion A. C. Galey of Southern Pines, widow of a former Philadelphia American League owner, was injured but expected to recover. Latting suffered a broken neck.
