Russia, identified as imperialistic, seeks to extend influence in the Far East by mobilizing a renewed campaign to dominate backward peoples and build an empire. The call emphasizes expansionist policy and strategic reach beyond European borders.
Berlin reports rejuvenated Third Internationale under Zinovieff with a new German Executive Committee. Russia plans broader Asia focus and possible conflict with Britain, Europe. Soviets see China revolt as leverage to claim Asia and challenge Britain, France, and Germany.
Senator Watson of Indiana urged at the Senate Finance Committee for federal taxes to be cut by at least 200 million dollars. He endorsed a 25 percent cap on the combined normal and surtax on net incomes though he did not specify surtax rates for the next Congress. He projected bond obligations would drop about 5.5 billion by 1935 and opposed more lenient funding terms for debtor nations than those offered Britain, except perhaps an extension of time for final settlement.
The Siemer Motor Car Company of Mt. Healthy reports seven inquiries on a Durant and eight on a Dodge after running Commercial Tribune Classified Ads. Both cars sold quickly, making the seven day ads profitable with costs of $1.40 each and selling prices around $1,400. Call Canal 6300 to place an ad.
Paris July 9. A film romance unfolds at the country home of Mile. Huguette Duflos wife and star of Theater Francais and cinema. Two burglars break in seeking valuables but are captivated by a portrait of Duflos and one abandons the loot praising her art and beauty promising a confession to her.
Robert Cavagna a 23 year old mechanic from 1621 Grant wood avenue was sentenced by Judge George F. Eyrich Jr to ten days in jail a $100 fine and two month driving ban after speeding at 40 mph drunk through Eden Park at 2 am. He claimed he got off easy and said jail life was hot and dull. Police followed his zig zag drive from McMillan street to Eden Park and recovered a bottle of gin in his car.
Mrs Mary Brent Dabney 64 wife of Dr Charles William Dabney former University of Cincinnati president died at Bethesda Medical Hospital Cincinnati after five weeks with arthritis. She is survived by two daughters Mrs Alexander Thomson New York and Mrs John W Ingle New York. Funeral at Spring Grove Cemetery Chapel with burial there conducted by Rev John W Christie. Dr Dabney to sail to Thomson summer home Harbor Springs Michigan before returning to Houston.
In Martins Ferry for twenty five years residents knew Leona Feterers as a girl but authorities say Leona is a man named George Myers. Myers lived as a young woman, attended parties and worked as an electrician. Arrests followed a trip to Warren where the disguise was dropped and Judge Sydney Jones labeled the prisoner as George. He awaits charges.
Frank B. Kellogg Secretary of State, on vacation at his St Paul home, left suddenly for Washington. He would not reveal the nature of the affairs calling him back. Mrs. Kellogg remains in St Paul for an indefinite time.
Secretary Kellogg, who left Washington for an indefinite vacation, will fly from St. Paul to Swampscott Massachusetts to confer with President Coolidge. He is due in Swampscott on Saturday and plans to return to Washington after the Swampscott conference ends. The conference topics are not disclosed.
A partial solution to the building trades war was reached at a New York conference. Plasterers return to work pending arbitration with the Bricklayers Union, while contractors will employ plasterers on all jobs pending settlement. Edward J. McGivern and Peter Cook led the plasterers. firms included George A Fuller, Longacre, Thompson Starrett, and F T Ley, with work in Detroit and others. a Cleveland convention will discuss the dispute.
Clarence Davidson 26 of East Third street broke into Mrs Hattie Graves home on Pearl and Lawrence streets and shot after a confrontation. Graves and Davidson were wounded in the pistol duel with police pursuing through the city. Graves and her husband Clyde Graves a bartender at Second and York streets Newport identified Davidson as a past annoyance cleared for possible questioning.
Kansas City July 9 L J Chapman head of a daily, overcome by heat last Friday, will leave in a refrigerator car for the coolest place in the United States a tiny island in Lake Superior. Surrounded by ten tons of ice, he and companions will ride as doctors monitor his heart after a severe sunstroke years ago.
Muskegon Michigan July 9 Krip an old brindle bulldog owned by Mabel Hill died after sacrificing himself to shield his mistress from a rattlesnake near her Pt Sheldon cottage. The dog attacked the exposed snake and killed it but was fatally bitten, dying within an hour as the poison took effect.
The Anthracite Operators Association rejected United Mineworkers demands for a wage increase claiming costs and competition would harm the industry. Samuel Warriner and John L. Lewis sparred over arbitration as miners emphasized industry hazards and sacrifices since 1923.
Miss Minnie Reiger of Chicago, 40, is charged with poisoning Elmer Sherman who was under her care after his mother could not support him. A $250 life insurance policy naming Reiger as beneficiary was issued two weeks earlier. Post mortem confirmed death by poison. the mother, Dorothy Sherman, says she knew nothing of the policy.
Chicago scholars argue over evolution in the Tennessee case as Dr. H H Newman and Dean James F Hall discuss legal and scientific angles. They say the indictment may be challenged on four grounds and stress education through the trial.
A 7 year old girl, Rachel Weiner, frightened three armed men attempting a robbery at her father George Weiner’s grocery on Chestnut and Isabella streets in Newport. The robbers fled in a waiting car toward Central Bridge. police set a blockade but the getaway vehicle eluded capture.
Oklahoma politicians considered a Bartlesville rumor of plans to endorse Will Rogers for the Democratic nomination for governor next year. A Rogers reply was awaited before the proposed campaign gains momentum.
Two men perished when a plane burst into flames and dropped onto a field near Amboy. Pilot George O. Ceratt of Syracuse and passenger Clarence F. Felkins of Belle Island were aboard as the craft fell from about seven hundred to eight hundred feet in altitude.
Dayton Tennessee reports that an anti evolution bill authored by Rep Butler passed the state legislature and became law March 21. Scopes was arrested on a charge of violating the law as science teacher at Rhea County High School, with alleged violations in biology classes. A May 9 preliminary hearing led to binding over to a grand jury under a $1000 bond. A special grand jury was summoned and an indictment returned.
Bernard Shaw critiques Tennessee evolution laws and the anti evolution stance led by Bryan and Butler. He warns against religious fundamentalism, urges American press and churches to oppose it, and fears Tennessee becoming a haven for mores and moral cowards.
